He saw Fiona and Gwen walking in, and his eyes dropped to the floor.

Fiona and Gwen brushed past Hugh without a word and headed straight for the master bedroom.

The sound of crying drifted from the bedroom. Hugh’s eyes reddened as he turned and retreated to his study.

Ten minutes later, Fiona walked out of the master bedroom and asked Jemma, “Where’s that bastard?”

Jemma pointed toward the study. Fiona clicked across the floor in her heels and marched into the room.

When the study door closed behind her, Fiona raised her hand and slapped Hugh twice across the face.

Hugh just stood there and took it. He didn’t even try to dodge.

Fiona jabbed her finger at his nose, her voice shaking with rage. “For some bastard kid, you forced your own wife to abort your real son. Are you happy now?”

Hugh shook his head in anguish. “When Megan came back, she was already suffering from severe depression. I promised to help hide the kid’s real father because I was scared Grandpa would go after her again. I wanted her to get back on her feet and live without constantly looking over her shoulder.”

Hugh pressed his hand against his chest, trying to push down the dull ache in his heart.

He thought he could balance things between Bethan and

He never imagined it would spiral this far out of control.

And he definitely never expected that Bethan would hide her pregnancy from him and secretly abort their child behind his back.

Hugh sank into the couch, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees, running his hands through his hair.

He stayed quiet for a long moment.

Finally, he spoke, “Mom, Megan was my first love. When we broke up back then, it was Grandpa who forced us apart. I’ll admit that seeing her again really messed with my head emotionally. But I have my limits. I never touched her. I never betrayed Bethan. And I sure as hell never thought about getting divorced.”
