Before Calvin could finish, Bethan jumped in graciously, “Mr. Byron, you don’t need to explain. You’re a good father, and I understand. If being his godmother will help heal this little guy, then godmother it is.”

Calvin noticed the thin layer of sweat on Bethan’s forehead and reached over to take Henry. “I didn’t expect Dr. Olsen to be so understanding. Henry and I both thank

you.”

Bethan didn’t argue. Calvin, ever the sharp-tongued attorney, knew exactly what to say.

Bethan and Calvin turned toward the hospital’s main building. That was when Hugh called out to Bethan.

She stopped and turned around. Hugh held out a pharmacy bag to her. “I tried calling but you didn’t pick up, so I brought your medication over.”

Bethan reached out and took the bag.

Hugh’s eyes found Bethan’s for a complicated moment. “We’re married,” he said.

Calvin looked confused. “Then who was that woman in the hospital room the other day?”

Hugh explained, “I’m sorry, Mr. Byron. The child who hurt your son isn’t mine. His mother and I go way back. That day at the hospital, I didn’t clarify our relationship right away because I was trying to help resolve things quickly. I apologize for the misunderstanding.”

Calvin nodded with understanding. “No need to apologize, Mr. Cavill. As long as Dr. Olsen wasn’t confused about anything.”

Hugh started to step closer to Bethan, but she turned to Calvin instead. “Let’s go, Mr. Byron.”

Whether she was confused or not didn’t matter to Hugh.

He was only explaining now because things had spiraled beyond his control.

He just wanted to calm her down temporarily, to keep her from making this whole situation worse than it ready:48

was.

Hugh’s foot, which had been about to step forward, slowly lowered back down.

He stood listening as Bethan casually introduced Megan to Calvin as Hugh’s first love.

She told Calvin they were star-crossed lovers torn apart by their families.

She mentioned that she and Hugh were currently discussing their divorce.

Hugh froze in place, his heart sinking like a stone.

She was determined to air all his dirty laundry, telling the whole world she was divorcing him.

A sharp pain twisted through Hugh’s chest, and he instinctively pressed his hand against it.

Back in his car, Hugh sat there for a long while, trying to Buй himself together.

Finally, he sent Bethan a text before driving away.

After Bethan got Calvin and Henry settled in their hospital room, she saw Hugh’s message reminding her not to forget her medication.

She couldn’t help but feel bitter about it. Bethan pretended she hadn’t seen it at all.

A little after ten in the morning, Megan knocked and entered Bethan’s office.

Bethan checked the appointment list on her computer. Once she confirmed it was Megan, her face went cold.

Before Megan could sit down, Bethan said flatly, “Find someone else. I can’t treat whatever you’ve got.”

Megan caught Bethan’s reaction, and her eyes flashed with challenge. “Dr. Olsen, I know you’re bitter about Hugh being good to me, but you’re a doctor. Saving lives is your job. I already booked an appointment with you- how can you just refuse to treat me?”

Bethan really didn’t want to deal with Megan.

on between Hugh and me, I never thought about making your life difficult,” Bethan said.

“I was the one who misjudged people. Hugh was the one who hurt me. And sure, you’re not exactly innocent, but honestly? I just don’t want to deal with you,” she continued.

“The Cavill family already knows Hudson isn’t Hugh’s blood. You better go find Hugh and work something out while Harvey’s still unconscious. Once Harvey wakes up and comes after you, it’ll be too late for regrets.”

Megan’s voice wavered as she challenged Bethan. “How are you so sure Hudson isn’t Hugh’s son?”

Bethan raised an eyebrow. “Because Hugh told me himself. Don’t believe me? Go ask him.”

Megan’s legs gave out. She stumbled backward and crashed into the office door with a dull thud.

Panic-stricken, she spun around and rushed out of the

office.
