Chapter 308 Guilt
Hugh met Bethan’s calm gaze and slowly released her.
It clicked. She’d been so quiet while he held her because she’d seen her father approaching with the stick.
She’d just stood there, watching him get hit.
He turned to face Vincent and Miranda, his voice tight.
“It’s been a while…”
Miranda ignored him, pulling Bethan out of the
bathroom.
Vincent fixed Hugh with a cold stare. “Spare the pleasantries, Mr. Cavill. We’re not worthy.”
He tossed the stick aside, the wood clattering on the floor.
Hugh hung his head, following Vincent to the living
room.
Bethan knew her parents didn’t want to humiliate him, but they couldn’t bear to look at him either.

“Wait in the car,” she told him. “I need to talk to Mom
and Dad.”
Hugh glanced at the couple-both pointedly looking away -then mumbled a goodbye and left.
As soon as the door closed, Miranda grabbed Bethan’s hand, panic in her eyes. “Sweetheart, what’s really going on? You’re not… taking him back, are you?”
Bethan squeezed her mother’s hand. “Dad, Mom, whatever he wants is his business. I only brought him here to grab something. Don’t overthink it.”
Miranda still looked worried. “Hugh grew up with us. He’s always been stubborn. Now that Megan’s in jail, I’m scared he’ll pester you nonstop.”
Bethan’s voice hardened. “I haven’t forgotten a single thing he put me through. No matter what he does, I’ll never go back to him.”
She paused, softening. “But you know, Fiona and Gwen have always been good to me. We share friends, social circles… We’ll cross paths. But I have boundaries. I won’t let him hurt me again.”

Vincent and Miranda nodded, relieved.
As Bethan headed out, Miranda chased her with an umbrella. “Forecast says it’ll rain this afternoon. Take
this.”
In the car, Bethan’s eyes flicked to the red marks on Hugh’s white shirt, then quietly looked away.
Vincent had been holding back his anger for a long time. That beating was definitely not gentle.
But compared to the pain Hugh had caused her, it was nothing.
The car pulled away.
“I’m wearing the necklace,” Bethan said flatly. “Now tell me, what’s wrong with James?”
Hugh avoided her question. “When did Arthur move next door?”
Bethan frowned. “I asked you first.”

Hugh stared at her, his voice low, almost to himself. “My
shoulder’s injured.”
They locked eyes.
Bethan turned to the window.
She could feel Hugh’s burning gaze on her, but she ignored him.
Once, she’d worried if he so much as coughed. Now, his pain meant nothing to her.
The ride was silent.
When they passed a supermarket near the hospital, Bethan told the driver to stop. “I need to buy something. I’ll walk the rest of the way.”
Before Hugh could respond, she was out of the car.
He rolled down the window, staring blankly at Bethan’s figure crossing the street.
“Mr. Cavill, should we head back to the office now?”

At the driver’s reminder, Hugh snapped back to reality and noticed Bethan’s umbrella on the seat.
He grabbed it and followed her inside.
In the tissue aisle, Bethan spotted Lillian Rowe, an old classmate, with her boyfriend. They were picking out feminine hygiene products.
Watching the couple’s affectionate interaction, Bethan didn’t approach them.
Lillian asked cheerfully, “Have you ever bought these things for other girls before?”
The man immediately spoke up. “Honey, what are you saying? These are such personal things, I’d only buy them for my own girl, never for anyone else!”
Seeing Lillian’s happy smile, Bethan looked away. A twinge of longing mixed with bitterness overwhelmed. her:

tightening.
He stood frozen in place as if nailed to the spot, too heavy with guilt to take another step toward Bethan.
He stopped two passing girls, asking them to give the umbrella to Bethan, then hid behind a shelf as she looked his way.
He’d bought those exact products for Megan once, and
Bethan had seen him.
Remembering Bethan’s look back then, he felt like his heart was being carved out.
He’d never cared about her cramps, never done something so simple for her in their three years of marriage.

Outside the supermarket, Bethan glanced at the umbrella in her hand.
Feeling her phone vibrate, she answered Edith’s call. She walked toward the hospital while talking on the phonfg:45
