Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 31

Chapter 31 They’re Married

He pulled her into his arms and didn’t let go.

“I’m trying to have a proper conversation with you, Bethan,” Hugh said, trying to keep his tone steady. “Can you stop blowing up at every word?”

There was a knock at the door. Hugh lowered his voice. “We’ll talk about the apology later. You’ve still got work this afternoon. Try to get some rest.”

He gave her a brief hug before stepping back. “I’ll go get you something to eat. Take a moment and calm down.”

He knew exactly when to stop-just before Bethan completely broke down.

Once he left, she collapsed onto the desk, drained. Her whole body felt like it had been wrung out.

Hugh hadn’t backed off out of compassion. It wasn’t because he cared about how she felt.

He was protecting Megan, preserving his reputation, and shielding the Cavill family name.

After all, if Bethan lost control here in the hospital and people found out he’d cheated-found out Megan was being treated here-the biggest fallout wouldn’t be hers. It would be his.

At some point, Hugh came back to drop off a lunchbox. He didn’t stay.

The moment he was gone, Bethan threw the food straight into the trash.

By 5:30 p.m., she clocked out on time.

Brandon wasn’t scheduled for the night shift-three days on, two off-so Bethan planned to take her day off tomorrow to visit her parents.

Just as she stepped into the outpatient building lobby with a coworker, a familiar voice stopped her. “Dr. Olsen, could I have a moment?” Megan stood in front of them, blocking their path.

She didn’t call Bethan “Mrs. Cavill”, not in front of hospital staff. She used the more professional “Dr. Olsen”.

Bethan had zero interest in speaking to her privately, so she motioned for her female colleague to stay beside her. “If you’ve got something to say, Ms. Ridley, go ahead,” Bethan said coolly.

Seeing she had an audience, Megan offered an apology.

“I heard you’re off work tomorrow,” she said. “That’s why I came over-to apologize.”
