Chapter 30 Apologize To Megan
His hand fell awkwardly through the air before dropping back to his side. For a moment, he said nothing. Then he pulled out the chair beside her and sat down.
Turning to face her fully, he said, ‘Bethan, can we talk? Calmly.”
Bethan turned her head mechanically and gave him a cold glance. “What is there to talk about?”
She already knew why he was here. Gwen had just come to see her.
That was when she found out—Hugh had threatened his own sister just to force her to apologize to Megan. He was even willing to send Gwen overseas as punishment.
If he could be that ruthless to his own flesh and blood, what kindness could she possibly expect from him?
Hugh looked directly at her, his expression unreadable, “Megan’s in the hospital. Gwen hit her.”
Bethan didn’t hesitate. “Then arrest me. I’ll take the blame.”
She knew it all started because of her. She couldn’t keep letting Gwen fight her battles.
She had told herself she was ready for this. But hearing it out loud still sent a sharp pain through her chest.
She stood to leave, but Hugh grabbed her wrist. “Gwen only went after Megan because you told her to, didn’t she?”
So this was what it was really about. He hadn’t come to talk. He came to interrogate her.
Bethan felt the heat rising in her chest. She tried to keep her voice calm, unwilling to make a scene in public.
“Yes,” she admitted. “I asked Gwen to go.”
Gwen had done it to stand up for her. And of course, Hugh was furious-anything that happened to Megan broke his heart.
Bethan didn’t want Gwen to get dragged into this any further. She didn’t want to bring her down with her.
But apologize? That was never going to happen.
Their eyes locked.
