Chapter 311 Hooking Up
Mason’s words stabbed Hugh’s heart like needles, the pain nearly knocking him off his feet.
He said nothing, grabbed his jacket, and stumbled out of the private room.
He’d wronged Bethan badly. But letting her go? That was impossible.
Hugh had no idea how he made it home. When he pushed open the front door, the living room lights were on.
His chest tightened. He dropped his jacket and raced in.
For a split second, he swore he saw Bethan in her cartoon pajamas, tossing a throw pillow aside and running toward him.
“Bethan…”
Hugh opened his arms to pull her close.
His hands closed around thin air. There was nothing
thege.

Eyes bloodshot, he slowly looked up.
Bethan was gone.
Hugh instinctively clutched his chest over his shirt and stumbled onto the couch.
Staring hollowly at the ceiling, he pulled out the crystal pendant Bethan had left him and gripped it so tight his knuckles whitened.
Suddenly, a sharp pain stabbed his chest. Combined with the burning in his stomach, it made him curl up in agony.
Fumbling for his phone, he opened Bethan’s contact over and over before finally working up the nerve to call.
After ten rings, she picked up.
Hugh sat up, gritting his teeth against the pain.
She answers this late… She still cares, right?
I knew she wouldn’t be that cruel.

Fighting through the ache, Hugh said, “Bethan, my stomach’s killing me.”
Bethan’s voice came through cold as ice. “Hugh, if you’re actually sick, call 911.”
After a brief pause, she went on. “I’m warning you one last time. We’re divorced. The only reason I haven’t blocked your number is out of respect for your mom and sister. I’m trying to leave everyone with a little dignity.
“But if you call me again for something stupid, don’t blame me for adding you to my blacklist.”
Bethan hung up without hesitation.
Hugh’s physical pain and heartache hit a fever pitch. His phone slipped from his limp hand and crashed to the floor.
He closed his eyes, hiding the bloodshot redness.

A few days later, Hugh stood at Barry’s school entrance, holding a bouquet of sunflowers.

Today was SAT day. The school gates were packed with parents seeing their kids off.
Hugh spotted Bethan instantly in the crowd.
She wore a yellow dress that hugged her curves, making her look even more stunning-breath-taking, almost.
His gaze flicked to Arthur beside her, and his expression
darkened.
Adjusting his tie, Hugh started walking toward her.
“Uncle Barry, you’re gonna crush it!” Henry yelled, shoving a huge bouquet of sunflowers into Barry’s hands.
Hugh watched Barry take the flowers and froze mid-step.
Looking down at his own bouquet, his face went stiff. His flowers were totally redundant now.
After seeing Barry into the exam hall, Bethan turned and caught a glimpse of a familiar figure.
“I think I just saw Hugh,” she told Arthur.

Arthur stepped in front of her, standing on his tiptoes to block her view completely.
“Your eyes are playing tricks on you. You’re seeing things,” he said.
Calvin shook his head with a smile, staying out of it.
Bethan split off from Arthur at the school gate and rode to the hospital with Calvin.
When she walked into her office, Tristen was waiting.
Tristen handed her an invitation. “My sister’s eighteenth birthday party this weekend. You have to come.”
Bethan agreed without hesitation. “Sure, I’ll be there on time.”
Money really did make things easier. She remembered her own eighteenth birthday. Her parents had thrown her a huge bash, too.
But when Barry turned eighteen, they’d just taken a family photo and cooked a nice dinner at home.

It wasn’t that they couldn’t afford a party. Like Miranda had said, they were regular people now. No need for all that fancy stuff.

On Gloria Dixon’s eighteenth birthday, Bethan brought Barry and Arthur along. They drove to Dixon Manor together.

At 8 PM, they met Calvin and Henry at the gates.
Henry raced over to Bethan. “Godmom, you look so pretty today!”
Arthur patted Henry’s butt lightly. “You little brat. Did your dad teach you to say that?”
Henry looked back at Calvin. “Dad, isn’t Godmom super pretty?”
Calvin nodded. “Her beauty speaks for itself. You don’t have to force the compliment.”
Bethan knew Calvin was just being polite, but

compliments always put her in a good mood.
Barry scooped Henry up, beaming as he asked, “C’mon, tell me. I’m handsome, right?”
Henry wrapped his little arms around Barry’s neck, his voice full of affection. “You’re the handsomest! Even handsomer than Dad!”
