She hadn’t expected him to be so protective of his family. If that was the case, she’d better start thinking of a way to get on Gwen’s good side.

Megan was smart enough not to ask any questions. Hugh didn’t offer any explanations either.

Once the nanny left, the room fell quiet.

Noticing that Hugh seemed distracted, Megan tested the waters. “Hugh, Mrs. Cavill made a scene with you, and now she’s telling coworkers that I’m your wife. Are you really not going to let me talk to her? Maybe clear things up?”

Hugh’s voice was calm. “There’s no need.”

Megan said softly, “Mrs. Cavill works at this hospital. If she sees you taking care of me, she’ll probably blow up again. Don’t come anymore, Hugh. Just hire a caregiver for me starting tomorrow.”

Hugh didn’t argue.

He replied, “Megan, on behalf of my sister and my wife, I apologize for what happened. I’ll get someone to renovate your apartment. Stay in the hospital for now until it’s sorted.”

think it through—”

“Even an apology is off the table,” Hugh cut in, firm.

As long as the two of them didn’t meet, there wouldn’t be any unnecessary drama.

Bethan was proud—unless she was provoked, she wouldn’t even spare Megan a second glance.

And Megan was a quiet woman. As long as she didn’t go out of her way to approach Bethan, there was no reason she’d get hurt.

Hugh’s voice left no room for argument. Megan finally gave in. “Alright. I’ll listen. From now on, I’ll make sure I don’t appear in front of Mrs. Cavill again.”

By the time Hugh got Megan settled and returned home, it was already past 8 p.m.

The house was pitch-dark. Not a single light was on and there was no sound. It was so quiet. It felt like no one lived there at all.

Dragging his tired body up the stairs, Hugh found the master bedroom door locked from the inside.

He stood in the hallway, staring at it.
