Chapter 34 He Kissed Her

Her cup was disposable. His was the mug he usually kept in the study for drinking coffee.

There were no couple’s towels-only disposable face cloths.

Bethan’s slippers were a bright cartoon pair she bought herself. Hugh was wearing the plain gray guest slippers.

Hugh looked at their reflections in the mirror.

Ever since the day Bethan smashed everything in the house, their marriage had turned into a patchwork of mismatched pieces-like her paper cup beside his business mug, or her cute yellow slippers next to his plain, borrowed ones. In a word— makeshift.

He finished brushing his teeth and washed his face, then pulled a fresh face towel for her. “I’m not going to the office today. Let’s go to the supermarket later and pick up some household stuff.”

Bethan grabbed her own towel and walked off without looking at him. “I don’t need anything. Buy your own if you’re missing stuff.”

She didn’t make it far before Hugh pulled her back by the waist.

In one smooth motion, he turned and lifted her onto the sink counter.

barely room to breathe. “Bethan,” he said quietly, “look at us. Do we even seem like husband and wife anymore?”

Bethan didn’t flinch under the intensity of his gaze. Her voice

was cool, edged with sarcasm. “Isn’t this exactly what you wanted? A stable marriage at home, and a lover fluttering outside like a pretty little flag.”

Right then, Hugh’s phone buzzed on the bathroom counter.

He picked it up, glanced at the screen, then turned it face-down without responding.

Bethan scoffed, “Don’t worry. I’ll never look at your phone again for the rest of my life.”

Hugh’s expression faltered as he stared at the numb, unreadable look on Bethan’s face. He gently pulled her into his arms.

“Bethan,” he murmured, “can we not keep going like this?”

Bethan closed her eyes, hiding the pain welling up behind them. “You’re right,” she said softly. “We shouldn’t be like this.”

If only she hadn’t loved him so deeply back then… If only she hadn’t insisted on marrying him no matter what, maybe none of this pain would exist now.
