Chapter 383 Heartless.

Bethan wordlessly approached the wardrobe. She began rummaging through the suits to find the last suit for Hugh.
All the while, with her back squarely to Mason, she kept her thoughts to herself.
It wasn’t lost on her that she came across as cold and unyielding lately, almost to the point of being heartless.
But she knew things used to be different.
Both she and Hugh were born under the Scorpio sign, a star-crossed alignment that gave them a shared, intense
nature.
They could love with a burning passion but also turn
stone-cold when the moment called for it.
After a while, she pulled out a well-tailored business suit, the kind that always made Hugh look sharp. She gently smoothed out the wrinkles, as if trying to iron out the creases in their
past.
Mason, sensing her inner turmoil, tried to offer some comfort, “Look, it’s your call not to forgive him. No one can fault you for

Back at the grand Cavill Manor, the atmosphere was somber.
Everyone was on edge, waiting for the final farewell the next morning.
Mason took a moment to pull Bethan aside. “Once the body’s been in the freezer and then thawed, the face gets all out of shape. Mrs. Fiona Cavill won’t be able to handle seeing Hugh like that. You should talk her out of going to the viewing.”
Bethan thought for a second and replied, “I’m not going, either. I’ll stay here with her. Just give me a ring after the cremation, and I’ll take her to the cemetery.”
Near Fiona’s room, Arthur was getting ready to leave. “Barry’s got an early flight tomorrow. Gotta go see him off.”
Bethan stepped forward and zipped up his coat. “Thanks, Mr. Locke.”
Arthur rolled his eyes. “Aw, come on, you’re like my sister. No need for thanks. Catch you later.”
Once Arthur was out of sight, Bethan made her way to the kitchen.
She decided to whip up a batch of stew, a warm and comforting dicke

headed for Gwen.
In the side-hall of the manor, Gwen sat slumped on the couch, looking as if the weight of the world was on her shoulders.
Bethan paused for a moment, not sure how to break the ice.
“You’ve got a long day ahead, Gwen. Have some of this stew. You need to keep your strength up.”
Gwen, her eyes red and puffy, looked up but didn’t take the bowl. “Will you be there to say goodbye to Hugh tomorrow?”
Their gazes locked for a moment, then Bethan shook her head softly.
Gwen turned away, her shoulders quivering slightly.
Bethan bent down to place the bowl on the coffee table, gave Mason a quick look, and then quietly left the room.
When a life ended, it was like the flame of a candle being snuffed out.
Whether she saw his body one last time or not didn’t seem to make a difference.

Mason led her to a seat and gently guided her to sit down. Then, he crouched down to help her change into slippers.
Gwen clung to his arm, her breathing ragged. “You know Hugh. Just like my grandpa and dad, he was as stubborn as an old mule.
“All my life, I’ve lost count of how many times Hugh
threatened me. He’d always say he’d freeze my credit card, stop my allowance, or send me abroad. But I knew it was all bluster. I could tell he loved me.”
Gwen’s emotions tumbled over the edge again. “Hugh treated me and Bethan the same way. Sure, he made mistakes, but all the tricks he pulled on Bethan were just to scare her. He never meant to do any real harm.
“I get why Bethan won’t forgive him. But why won’t she even take one last look at him now that he’s gone?”
Mason wrapped his arms around Gwen, offering a steadying support.
“Gwen, Bethan and your brother were strangers long before this. She came here because she values her bond with you and Mrs. Fiona Cavill, not because of your brother.”

Beneath the wave of grief, Gwen knew it deep down.

As dawn began to paint the sky, the first winter rain of the season started to fall in New York.
It was a gentle drizzle, but it was enough to soak everything in its path.
By the time full daylight broke, the Cavill family had gathered in large numbers.
Bethan stayed by Fiona’s side in the room, keeping a low profile.
Those who came to visit Fiona shot different looks at Bethan.
There were gazes full of complexity, resentment, disgust, and disdain, but also some of sympathy and pity.
Bethan kept her head down, remaining composed.
After everyone left, Bethan stepped out of the room for some fresh air.
Inside, Fiona, noticing Bethan had been gone for a while,
