Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 401

Chapter 401 Enough of Degrading Myself

Late at night on the sidewalk by the road, the two stood in silence, locking eyes.

It seemed like the entire world had fallen quiet.

Hugh’s fear welled up gradually, and his look at Bethan grew more and more complex.

Seeing Hugh staring at her without a word, Bethan finally broke the silence.

“I’ve truly treasured our twenty-some years of friendship as childhood sweethearts. But if you wanna be strangers, I’m okay with that.”

With that, she whirled around and strode off briskly.

In essence, Bethan was giving Hugh two choices.

One, Hugh could drop the idea of marrying her. She’d keep the gifts, and they’d stay childhood friends.

Two, if Hugh insisted on the marriage, Bethan would return all the presents and cut off all ties.

High just stood there, stunned, his fingertips turning white he tightly clutched the bank card.

In his past life, all Bethan wanted was to sever their relationship.

Could it be that my earlier suspicion was right? Is Bethan really reborn?

Back in his car, Hugh immediately gave Jacob a call.

At 8:30 on Monday morning, as soon as Hugh got to his office, Jacob rushed in to share the investigation results.

“Mr. Cavill, I’ve texted Ms. Olsen’s current address to your phone. And we’ve reached out to the buyer of that jewelry set, but they’re not keen on selling it back.”

Sitting at his desk, Hugh looked visibly irritated. “Cancel all my schedules for today and set up an appointment for me.”

At 2 p.m., Hugh showed up at the Olsen family’s rented place. Bethan’s parents welcomed him into the living room.

Hugh handed over the briefcase in his hand. “I’ve got this jewelry set back for you. Now it’s where it belongs.”

Vincent and Miranda exchanged a glance. Miranda opened the Briefcase to take a look. It was indeed her family’s heirloom emerald jewelry.

Shutting the briefcase, she pushed it back to Hugh. “Hugh, we’ve already sold this jewelry. Since you bought it back, it’s yours. We can’t take it.”

Hugh paused for a second and then asked, “Can you tell me why Bethy suddenly called off the engagement?”

Seeing the hesitation on their faces, Hugh added, “I wanna know the real answer.”

Vincent heaved a sigh. “Hugh, you come from a good family, and you’re a great guy. We’ve always thought highly of you. But we’ve spoiled Bethy. If she says she doesn’t wanna get married, we just can’t bring ourselves to force her.”

Miranda chimed in, “Bethy didn’t lie to you. The reason she gave you is the same as what she told us. Besides, it’s a good thing for a girl to have a career. She started working at the Mount Sinai Medical Center today.”

Hugh subtly lowered his eyes.

So Bethan had gone straight to the Dixon family’s hospital.

Meanwhile, Bethan and Yvonne were loitering by the roadside, awaiting another friend.

Yvonne spoke up, “You’re still a young thing yourself. If you tie the knot, you’ll be stuck taking care of your husband’s family, dealing with all the social rigmarole, and maybe popping out a kid. Where’s the life in that?”

“I’ve turned over a new leaf.” Bethan bobbed her head vigorously.

Yvonne slung her arm around Bethan’s. “For ages, you’ve only had eyes for Mr. Cavill. You’ve been like a love-struck fool. What on earth made you see the light?”

Bethan dropped her gaze and mumbled, “It gets tiring always being the one chasing. One morning, I just woke up and thought? Enough of degrading myself.”

Yvonne seized the chance to chime in, “Sure, Mr. Cavill’s a looker, and he’s got brains, but he’s left you high and dry all these years. That’s a big fat no. Marrying a guy like that is like signing your own death warrant in the marriage department!”

“Don’t fret. If I do say ‘I do’, it’ll be to someone who’ll have my back, cherish me, click with me, and never leave me in the cold.” Bethan nodded.

Having had a taste of the “marriage grave” once, she was determined not to take a second plunge.

Yvonne fixed her eyes on Bethan. “They say the fastest way to ditch an old flame is to find a new one. So, have you snagged a new boyfriend?

“When did this romance start?

“How long have you been an item?”

Bethan sidestepped the questions artfully. “Spill the beans on how far you and your guy have gone, and then I’ll dish about my new man.”

Just then, a white sedan pulled up with a gentle honk. Bethan and Yvonne climbed in, still playfully jostling each other.

As the white car pulled away, the window of the black Bentley slid down.
