Chapter 408 He Was Never an Easy-Going Guy
After reaching an agreement with her family, Bethan headed back to her room.
Since her rebirth, she’d experienced intermittent spells of daze.
Her mind was in a jumble.
Bethan had been so caught up in dealing with Hugh, interning at the hospital, selling jewelry to pay off Hugh’s debt, and severing all ties with him that she hadn’t had the chance to closely observe Hugh’s extremely abnormal behavior lately.
Bethan suddenly ran off while claiming their marriage certificates.
By Hugh’s old ways, he would’ve found her right away. He’d either force her to go through with the wedding or make her give an explanation.
But he didn’t come looking for her all day.
Even when Hugh showed up that evening, it was to win her back, without a single word of blame.
His uncharacteristically humble and cautious manner-at that time, she just thought he wanted to save face and connue the5 wedding.
In retrospect, it was not Hugh’s style at all.
If he wanted to get her to comply, he had plenty of ways.
There was no need to lower himself to her level.
Moreover, he uncharacteristically defended her and even proposed.
When Bethan rejected him, he didn’t get angry but was willing to return to their childhood-friend relationship.
Hugh was known for his cold and noble demeanor, shrewdness, and ruthless means. He was never an easy-going guy.
After calming down completely, Bethan suddenly felt a chill run down her spine.
After much thought, there were only two possible reasons for Hugh’s abnormal behavior.
Firstly, he wasn’t reborn. He was just acting, weighing the pros and cons. Maybe he saw her as a fallback option until his true love came back.
Secondly, Hugh was also reborn, just like her, with memories their past life. His humility and caution were sincere, out of guilt and self-blame, but he just couldn’t bring himself to admit it.
Bethan’s mind was in a mess, just like her still-unordered room.
She didn’t want to waste more time and energy on Hugh and the past.
Once Megan and her son returned to the country, everything would be clear.
But the big question was how to make that happen and, at the same time, keep herself out of it.
According to the current timeline, Megan hadn’t committed any of those bad deeds yet.
Bethan didn’t want to know this scheming woman, have any contact with her, or be involved with her at all.
Bethan lay awake, lost in thought, for most of the night.
His eyes landed on several huge packing bags at the end of the bed. He walked over to Bethan and asked, “Need a hand?”
Bethan glanced at the packing bags and calmly shifted her gaze.
Inside were all the gifts Hugh had given her over the years. She hadn’t found a place to store them yet.
After throwing away the wet wipe in her hand, Bethan probed gently, “Your birthday’s coming up in a few days. How are you planning to celebrate it?”
Hugh stared intently at Bethan’s expression and frowned involuntarily. He said, “Same as always, spending it with you.”
Bethan stopped what she was doing. Tilting her head slightly to meet Hugh’s gaze, she told him, “Hugh, I made it clear to you last night. We…”
Hugh interrupted her, his face set, “Regardless of what my grandpa and dad said or did, it doesn’t represent me!
“After all these years of growing up together, I’ll always be your Huggie!”
The two stood face-to-face at close range.
Bethan nodded, showing a resigned look, and said, “Even though we’ve had such a great bond as childhood friends, we’re all grown-ups now.
“We’re not husband and wife, not a couple, and not siblings, either. People will talk if we get too close.”
Hugh stared at Bethan with intense eyes.
When he spoke again, his voice softened unconsciously, “I’m okay with being your husband or your boyfriend. As long ast you want me to be!”
