Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 428

Chapter 428 No Wonder Bethan Ditched You

That evening, as soon as Hugh stepped into his place, Mason showed up.

Hugh was in dark-colored PJs, sitting in front of the sofa. He poured Mason a glass of wine as Mason plopped down restlessly.

Mason took the glass and grumbled at Hugh, "Dude, you know what Charles is up to with Gwen. What's so special about that crummy charity dinner?"

"He's still your cousin. Watch your tongue." Hugh shrugged casually.

Mason gulped down the wine, then put the glass down and got serious.

"My family's pushing me to get engaged. They brought the girl to my place out of the blue. I'm in a foul mood, so don't make it worse. You go to the charity dinner with Gwen this Saturday."

Hugh swirled the wine in his glass slowly. "It's fine. If you're tied up, let Gwen go alone."

That set Mason off. He shot up, fuming. "Hugh, I thought we were tight. You're okay with Gwen becoming my cousin's wife?"

Hugh retorted, "It wouldn't be bad if she became yours. Just wonder if you've got the balls."

Mason threw his hands up. "You've seen how Gwen is with me. If I tell her I like her, she'll probably punch me in the face and ghost me for good!"

Hugh was rendered speechless.

Still steamed, Mason started to rag on Hugh.

"You cold-hearted jerk. No wonder Bethan ditched you! You're doomed to be single forever. When Bethan gets married, she'll make you the best man and watch her on her wedding night. That'll kill you!"

With that, Mason stormed out.

Just as he reached the door, Hugh stood up and asked, "Has Bethy texted you?"

Mason looked back with a sneer. "She texted me right after her flight landed. Sent me quite a few."

After Mason left, Hugh fished out his phone.

No calls or texts from Bethan.

He started to pace around the living room, phone in hand, looking antsy.

After some tough thinking, he finally texted her.

Ten minutes ticked by with no reply.

Hugh was a mess inside.

Another ten minutes, and he worked up the nerve to video-call her.

Bethan had just stepped out of the shower when she saw the call and picked up.

The next morning at nine, in the president's office of the Cavill Group, Jacob placed a document on Hugh's desk.

He noticed Hugh was checking the Canadian weather forecast on his phone, pen in hand.

Jacob couldn't help thinking that Hugh was lovesick.

Throughout the morning, Jacob noticed Hugh peeking at his phone, his eyes lingering on a WhatsApp contact named "Honey" a couple of times.

As Hugh finally set the device aside, Jacob stepped up and informed him, "There's a Mr. Field outside. Didn't book an appointment, but he insists on seeing you."

Hugh shot a quick glance at Jacob. "What's he want?"

Jacob cleared his throat. "Says it's about Ms. Ridley."

Without a word, Hugh rose from his seat and made his way to the wine cabinet.

Memories of the past swirled in his mind. In his past life, Maria had managed to snag the title of Mrs. Field after his split with Bethan.

It was evident that there had been some under-the-table relationship between Bradley and Maria even before Bradley's divorce.

Jacob trailed behind, reminding him, "Mr. Cavill, it's been ages, and our evidence is as thin as a wafer. With Mr. Field getting involved and the Field family's clout, proving that the Ridley family staged that car accident for a payout is gonna be an uphill battle."

Hugh poured himself a glass of wine and sauntered over to the lounge area. "Send him in," he commanded.
