Chapter 439 The Bitter Fruit of Betraying Bethan
After Hugh and Milton stepped in to mediate, the elders of the two families decided that Mason and Gwen would get engaged by the end of the year.
Just like that, the matter was settled.
Even after the Martin family left, Gwen was still in a daze.
Did I really just casually promise myself away?
Outside the Cavill Manor, Mason didn't leave right away.
They got in the car, rolled down the windows, and each lit a cigarette.
"Hey, you took quite a few whacks from my grandpa's walking stick. You're sure you don't need to go to the hospital and get checked out?" Hugh asked Mason.
Mason grinned, clearly in high spirits. "Since when did you start caring about people?"
Hugh stared out of the car window, lost in thought as he puffed on his cigarette.
Seeing Hugh's reaction, Mason said, "I've made up my mind. I'll marry Gwen as soon as she graduates.
"You should make a move on Bethan. You don't wanna get married later than Gwen, right?"
At the mention of Bethan, Hugh's eyelashes fluttered.
There was no chance for them in this life.
Noticing Hugh was in a downcast mood, he puffed on a cigarette, rubbed his knee absentmindedly, then asked, "Hey, Hugh, cut the crap. What's really going on between you and Bethan?"
It was weird. Before their official registration for marriage, they were always together, really affectionate.
But that all changed when Bethan ditched Hugh at the City Hall. Things between them just went haywire after that.
Mason had tried multiple times to get answers from Bethan, but she kept all her secrets to herself.
When he asked Hugh, Hugh was just as uncooperative—he clammed up and wouldn't talk.
It was driving Mason up the wall with curiosity.
Hugh shot Mason a sideways look and quipped, "The wedding's been called off. Take a guess."
Bethan had claimed that he didn't love her.
And it wasn't just Bethan; even those around him seemed to share that opinion.
There was a period when he himself was convinced of it, too.
They'd grown up together, and Bethan had always depended on him like a little sister.
He'd been so certain that no matter what twists and turns life threw at them, she'd always be by his side.
But then, Bethan left him, and her decision was as firm as a rock.
"Come on, everyone in the circle knows how you feel about Bethan. You don't have to put on an act with me," Mason scoffed.
Frustrated, Hugh opened the car door and got out.
Early the next morning at the Cavill Group, Bradley finally caught up with Hugh at the exclusive elevator entrance.
"Mr. Cavill, hold up a sec," he called out.
Hugh stopped in his tracks and asked, "Mr. Field, what's the rush coming here so early?"
Eyeing Jacob beside Hugh, Bradley summoned the courage to speak up, "Mr. Cavill, I'm here about Ms. Ridley. Please go easy on her."
Hugh let out a scoff. "Go easy on her? Why should I?"
Bradley hunched in front of Hugh. "Mr. Cavill, if you spare Ms. Ridley this time, I guarantee she won't show up in front of you again. I'll compensate for the losses she brought to the Cavill Group."
Hugh stuffed his hands in his suit-pants pockets and stared down at Bradley. "Mr. Field, you seem pretty protective of Ms. Ridley, always bailing her out. Could it be that you're involved in her stealing the Cavill Group's core confidential documents?"
A cold sweat broke out on Bradley's back. He waved his hands frantically. "Mr. Cavill, don't get me wrong. Ms. Ridley is the niece of one of my friends."
Hugh was losing patience. "Good, as long as you're not involved."
Bradley watched Hugh step into the elevator and then rushed out of the Cavill Group.
After getting off the elevator, Hugh gave Gwen a call.
