Late at night, Hugh finally made his way home. The house was completely dark, with not a single light on.
He stood there for a moment, letting his eyes adjust to the darkness before flipping on the lights.
Throughout their three-year marriage, no matter how late Hugh got home, Bethan would always be curled up on the couch, waiting for him while watching TV.
The moment she saw him, she’d come running over barefoot, throwing her arms around him and planting kisses all over his face.
But tonight, she hadn’t left a single light on for him.
It was clear she was really mad this time.
Hugh trudged into the bedroom. It was pitch-dark. He fumbled for the bedside lamp, using what little light came through the curtains to find his way.
Bethan had her face buried in the pillow, apparently asleep.
Hugh sat down on the edge of the bed and gently brushed the stray hairs from her forehead, trying to figure out if she was actually asleep.
But Bethan just kept her face hidden under the covers.
After a moment’s hesitation, Hugh got up and headed to the bathroom.
Hearing the sound of running water, Bethan slowly opened her eyes.
Her eyelashes, wet with tears, fluttered. She quickly burrowed deeper under the covers.
A few minutes later, Hugh came out of the bathroom, wearing a dark bathrobe. His hair was still damp.
He walked over to the bed and bent down to check on Bethan. Thinking she was asleep, he switched off the light and made his way to the study.
In the study, it was completely dark. Hugh stood by the floor-to-ceiling window and lit a cigarette. He held the diamond bracelet in his hand.
She couldn’t have found out anything.
If she had, with her fiery temper, there would’ve been a huge scene.
The bracelet must have been just a coincidence.
Early the next morning, Bethan got up, got ready, and was about to go out to get breakfast for her parents.
Hugh came out of the walk-in closet, fully dressed.
Bethan had lost all interest in talking to Hugh. She grabbed her phone and was about to leave.
Hugh stepped in front of her and gently grabbed her wrist. “Where’s the bracelet? Why aren’t you wearing it?”
Bethan looked down and replied in a hoarse voice, “I don’t know. Maybe I lost it.”
Hugh ignored her hoarse voice and watched her closely. “I saw Barry last night.”
Bethan immediately realized Hugh was testing her.
Taking a deep breath, she looked Hugh straight in the eye. “After we split up last night, I went to the hospital to see my mom. Barry said he saw you on the 13th floor. I went looking for you but couldn’t find you, so I came back.”
Hugh took the diamond bracelet out of his pocket. “You dropped this at the hospital. I picked it up.”
He didn’t mention the real reason he was at the hospital.
He reached for her wrist to fasten the bracelet, but she pulled away. “I don’t want it.”
Hugh’s tone turned gentle, coaxing. “Wear this one for now. When I’m not so busy, I’ll take you shopping for whatever you want.”
Bethan felt like she was about to lose it.
All the pent-up anger and hurt from the past few days burst out at once.
She was on the verge of a breakdown. “I said I don’t want it! I don’t want it! I don’t want it! I don’t want gifts that aren’t special, and I don’t want a husband who isn’t completely mine!”
Seeing Bethan lose her temper, Hugh actually felt a bit relieved.
Bethan had been spoiled since she was a kid. Whenever things didn’t go her way, she’d throw a fit.
It seemed she was just mad that the gift wasn’t special enough.
Hugh naturally put his hands on Bethan’s waist and leaned in to kiss her.
But Bethan pushed him away hard.
Unlike before, when a simple gesture from him could make her all lovey-dovey, now she was crying and pushing him away. “No! No! No!”
She pushed, shoved, and pounded on him like she’d lost her mind.
Hugh grabbed her wrists impatiently. “Bethan, there’s a limit to this nonsense.”
