Hugh turned around and plopped down on the sofa. Then he poured himself another glass of wine.
“Bethan’s been relying on me since she was a kid. Give her some time to calm down, and she’ll come around,” he
said.
Mason took a seat opposite Hugh. “She has come around. She told me tonight that if she’d known you’d treat her like this, she’d have married me back then.”
Hugh froze, his hand holding the glass halfway in the air.
Mason couldn’t help but urge Hugh to let go. “Bethan’s been with us since she was a little thing. She grew from a naive girl into a beautiful young woman and then became your wife. She’s had a crush on you since childhood and called you ‘Huggie’ for over twenty years. You shouldn’t hurt her like this for Megan and give her the cold

“Did she tell you all that?” Hugh asked.
“She told me a whole lot more,” Mason said.

He looked away, put down the glass, and fumbled for a cigarette from the pack, his hands trembling.
The thin veil of smoke soon blurred his vision a bit.

“I admit I messed up regarding Megan and her son, but it’s not as bad as Bethan makes it seem.”
Mason gave Hugh a look like he’d seen a ghost. “You only gonna think it’s bad when Bethan’s dead in front of you?”
Hugh hung his head. “She won’t.”

Mason was so mad he couldn’t find the right words. 18:05

The dull ache in his shoulder reminded him that Bethan had been there just a little while ago.

The next morning, Bethan went out to buy
anti-inflammatory medicine for Barry. To her surprise,
she ran into Megan.
Megan was dressed to the nines in high heels and a tight-fitting skirt, with perfect makeup. She didn’t look like someone who’d been hit by a car at all.
When she spotted Bethan, she sauntered over. “Ms. Olsen, how’s your brother’s injury?”
Bethan glanced at her and ignored her.
Seeing Bethan’s silence, Megan walked over to a counter and bought two boxes of condoms.
At the pharmacy entrance, Megan caught up with Bethan and pulled out a box of contraceptives from her bag.
