Seven Years of Silence
ELIJAH’S POV:
I was all alone searching for her but never even found her. And the radio silence from her was defeaning and I had so much regret.
I still wish I could see her again one day.
FEW HOURS LATER.
“We are here.” The driver announced as soon as we arrived.
The car pulled up to the grand entrance of the Rosemont. Cameras flashed. A few reporters hovered nearby. Janet immediately fixed her smile and looped her arm through mine like we were still something to admire.
Were we even ever anything to admire?
She smiled brightly and even stopped to give me a kiss which drove the reporters crazy and they instantly flashed us my cameras. Janet looked the spotlight more than anything else in the world and she would throw a fit when the camera caught her ‘bad side’
“Come one.” I held her hand leading her in as she continued posing.
Inside, the ballroom was buzzing gold lights dripping from the ceiling, laughter and classical music bouncing off marble. People with too much money and too many secrets swirled around us in silks and sequins.
I grabbed a glass of scotch from a passing waiter.
“Try not to look like you hate everyone,” Janet muttered under her breath with a smile still plastered on her face. “We’re here to be seen.”
I ignored her and scanned the room, more out of habit than interest. And then I felt it.
That strange tug in my chest. Like a shift in the air.
I turned my head, slow and careful scanning the room.
There was a woman across the ballroom. Her back was to me at first, her hand resting on the shoulder of a little girl in a green dress. She bent slightly to speak to a boy beside her who looked about the same age.
Something about the shape of her. I don’t know if it was her posture, the way her hair caught the light and stopped my breath cold.
She turned slightly. Just enough for me to catch a glimpse of her profile.
A face I hadn’t seen in years. One I thought time had faded.
No… it couldn’t be. Could it? Was it the scoth making me see things or because I just remembered that night.
My chest tightened, and I stared harder.
The woman was smiling now. Composed. Elegant, Wearing an emerald green dress with silver detailing and heels that clicked softly across the marble as she walked beside a man.

The man was Lucas Benson.
I knew him every businessman in this city knew him. As a matter of fact, I think he was one of the partners which I was to working with in relation to the partnership with the fashion company.
My brows furrowed. Why was he with her when he was rumored to be attracted to men? Or was it a false rumor and that was his wife?
“She looks familiar,” I muttered aloud, more to myself than anyone. “Come on, let’s head to the VIP section.” I told Janet who as I glanced at her, she frowned.
Janet followed my gaze. “Who?” As we intertwined hands and headed up.
“That woman. In the green dress. With Benson.” I pointed out though I was skeptical at if she even knew him.
Janet squinted. “Hmm… I think that’s the mysterious CEO everyone’s been talking about. The one who owns Prestige.” Her voice carried a strange tone I had no idea but it was something between envy and curiosity.
I didn’t answer. I couldn’t.
My mind was racing. It looked like her. The same grace. The same quiet strength.
But… no. She had vanished. She had walked out of my life like I was nothing, and the crazy part is I don’t even blame her. She had no reason to come back. Especially not with kids.
Those were her kids? I need to relax because I might just be seeing things.
I sipped the scotch. The burn steadied me.
She hadn’t seen me. Or maybe she had. And didn’t care.
She was laughing now, surrounded by people. Even the kids looked comfortable, like they belonged here-like they’d done this a hundred times. They were just sitting with their eyes glued to their tabs and leaning on each other. They looked so adorable but yet familiar.
She didn’t look broken. She looked… rebuilt.
Janet tugged on my arm. “Come on. We’re being introduced to the investment board.”
But I couldn’t stop watching her. Or whoever she was.Because if that was Hannah…Then she didn’t just walk away. She won but she had always worn and I was always the one at a loss.
And for the first time in years, I felt something unexpected curl in my gut-not just confusion or surprise…But regret. And the worst part? I wasn’t even sure it was her.
But if it was…
God help me.
I still wasn’t ready to see her again. Because what would I say? How would I react? How would she react?
I finally darted my eyes away from her and headed in the direction, Janet was leading me to.
