HANNAH’S POV:
FEW DAYS LATER:
+25 Bonus
The past few days had been a blur of emotions, after thinking I had seen Elijah and Janet and never truly confirming if it was truly them. I had been thinking about the days coming and when I would really have to face them.
For now, I threw myself into work. Into designing. Into sketching collections that distracted me from the unresolved weight sitting in my chest. But today, for the first time in a while, I was proud of what I’d made.
“Thank you so much, these are amazing,” I told my assistant, Kara who had been appointed amongst the interns, smiling as she laid the garments across the racks in front of me. They were pieces from my new collection-fabric so rich and soft it almost melted between the fingers, shaped into gowns and structured suits I had envisioned months ago during my visit and stay at Trace.
She beamed grinning from ear to ear. “You’ve outdone yourself, ma’am.”
I reached out and ran my fingers along the hem of a midnight-blue coatdress stitched with metallic threads. “I think so too,” I murmured. Then I leaned back and exhaled. “They’re ready for Duncan Fashion Week.”
“They’ll be the highlight,” she assured me, checking something off her clipboard before her phone buzzed. “Oh sir said he’d be ready in ten minutes.”
Sir.
That’s what everyone calls Lucas now for some reason and Lucas found it so amusing.
I gave a small nod. “Thanks. You can head out for the day, Kara.” We were the only ones left and she had been working tirelessly all day and I was amazed at her enthusiasm and strength throughout the day.
She smiled gratefully and slipped out the door. I stood there for a moment, surrounded by racks of my work, breathing in the faint scent of lavender from the diffuser by the corner window.
Then I made my way upstairs.
Lucas had a meeting scheduled with one of his political associates tonight. I was supposed to attend with him. Not because I wanted to-honestly, I was tired-but because I had so much to do. We have been invited amongst other big fashion brands to an important fashion week and I was more than excited, it was impromptu and starting in about a week.
Lucas assured me he could take care of the meeting with the political associate, Mr Scott, and it was majorly more of a friendly meeting as they went way and he was one of our initial investors. He hit me at some point when he assumed Lucas and I weren’t a thing, but now he keeps things professional especially being married to one of the most respectable relationship authors, Yolanda. It was an odd combination to many but they were happy and he respected her.
I stopped in front of the mirror in my walk-in closet, appraising my reflection. My silk blouse was tucked into high-waisted trousers, hair pinned up in a sleek twist. A red lip. A delicate chain.
But when I looked closer, I could still see her. The girl who had once been too afraid to say no. The woman who

had walked away seven years ago with a broken heart and two unborn children.
A knock on the door jolted me.
I turned. “Come in.”
Lucas stepped in, dressed in a fitted black suit, his cufflinks catching the chandelier’s light. He looked sharp,
but his brow was furrowed.
“We have to reschedule,” he said without preamble.
I blinked. “They rescheduled the meeting?”
He stared at me with disappointment, “Yes. They said Something came up with the press and their CEO, and the team is reaching to render any kind of service. So it will probably be next week..”
“Oh,” I said, unsure what this meant, but at least it was simply shifted. I folded my arms. “So what now?”
Lucas glanced at me. “We could still go out.”
I raised an eyebrow and through squinted eyes making him chortle.
“Not for work,” he added, walking further into the room. “Dinner. Just you and me. With Scott and Leah. He just left and they have invited us to join them at this new restaurant they have been invited to.”
I hesitated as my mouth formed into ‘O’. “And things wouldn’t be awkward right?”
He frowned and asked, “Why would they be? I’m okay now, and Scott and I are cool. Aren’t you and Leah?”
I looked at him with concern and he let out a breath.
“I know,” he said quietly. “But everything is good.. I promise. We should leave by 7.”
He didn’t wait for a response before leaving and I let out a sigh. The truth is that he had a crush on Scott and when they were younger and Scott was exploring what it was like to be with a man, they had slept together. When Lucas saw him again, he was excited but Scott only saw him as a friend and made reference to what had happened to them as a dumb exploration between teenagers. Hitting on me was one thing but marrying Leah shattered Lucas. 1
The fun fact was that Scott had no idea about Lucas’ sexuality and I doubt it would have changed anything.
I mean the society wouldn’t really want a gay Senator, would they?
