Awkward Dinners & Unasked Questions
HANNAH’S POV:
We took one of the black SUVs from the garage, with his driver behind the wheel. The night air was cooler than usual, the city glittering around us as we drove past familiar streets that had changed since I left. Buildings had grown taller. Restaurants had popped up where I remembered empty lots. But the city still buzzed the same way.
Lucas hadn’t said much since we left the office. He kept glancing out the window, drumming his fingers softly on his thigh. I watched him from the corner of my eye. I grabbed his hand and gave it a tight squeeze after calling the kids and ensuring they were okay with Morgan who was baking them cookies.
She loved kids so much plus she was an amazing cook, baked the most amazing desserts.
We pulled up in front of a quiet restaurant tucked into the heart of N.A. It wasn’t flashy or extravagant-just a warm, ambient space with outdoor lanterns and soft jazz floating through the air.
Lucas helped me out of the car. His hand lingered on the small of my back a little longer and I smiled at hom.
Inside, we were led to a private booth with velvet curtains partially drawn. The table was set with flickering candles and crystal glasses. I traced the rim of mine, still not saying much where we instantly locked eyes with the beautiful couple.
“Hannah Jones…..you keep looking stunning every single time I see you. What’s the secret girl?” Leah instantly questioned, bringing a bright smile on my face.
“I could say the same. You’re radiating.” I complimented making her smile as we shared an embrace.
I shared a side hug with Scott as well, and he shook hands with Lucas and stared at him in questioning when he shook hands with Leah as well.
“Weird…” she muttered quietly but enough for all of us to hear and there was a awkward silence in the private room we were in.
The waiter arrived and poured a complimentary champagne and I instantly downed mine.
“The restaurant is beautiful, isn’t it?” I broke the silence seeing as the three of them looked back and forth between each other.
“Amazing. I plan to try out their seafood as it came highly recommended.” Leah stated, flipping her silk long black straight hair.
She was truly radiating and elegant, her gold ring as well as watch shimmered through the light. She was tall woman with a model figure and her skin was glowing in the white sleeveless gown she had on.
“I will be having the seafood too then.” I added, making Lucas snort and we all glanced at him and he quickly apologized.
I stared at him for a second before realizing why he was even laughing, “O My God, it has been years…get over it.” We both laughed making them confused.
“What happened?” Scott questioned and I laughed at the memory.

“Just this one time, we visited this restaurant during our visit to an island and the kids could swear they had seen the lobster move and after eating…after eating it they were jumping everywhere and claiming the lobster was alive in their bellies,” I said breaking in between my words and chuckling softly.
“Kids man.” Scott chuckled and Leah laughed and added, “I can’t imagine the drama they would have caused that night.”
“Boy you had to be there. I need to take a picture as soon as the meals are served because they hate lobsters now by the way. “I pointed out and they chuckled.
Soon our meals were served and the waiter brought our food-steak, lobsters, grilled salmon and mashed potatoes for me and we ate slowly, talking about mostly politics. The tension between us didn’t vanish completely, but it lessened. Just a little as the couple just have noticed loud Lucas wasn’t as loud.
I glanced at Lucas as he stared at Leah when I showed her a picture of the twins and she gushed at how big they’ve gotten and suddenly he asked, interrupting Leah when he asked, “Do you plan on having kids?”
Leah swallowed her food and answered, “Of course and we are working towards it. It has just been two years together and I know soon, everyone will be asking when.”
“That’s good.” he said. “It really has just been two years and you two have been glowing ever since.”
“Thank you, Lucas. And can I just add and ask what has been on both Scott and I’s mind?” She asked rhetorically before going on to say all while Scott was on his phone, “When are you two going to take things further?”
As soon as those words escaped her lips, Lucas laughed boisterously and said, “Let’s continue enjoying our meals, shall we?”
And I noticed when Leah whispered asking Scott if she had asked something wrong noticing the shift in energy once again. She felt so bad and it was glaring…I wanted to say something so bad but I bridled my tongue and smiled weakly at her.
Enjoying the rest of the awkward dinner.
The drive back home was meant to be filled with me scolding Lucas but as we walked outside the restaurant, embracing the heartfelt gratitude from the manager and owner of the restaurant grateful to us for honoring the
visit.
“You’re welcome” he said softly. “Thanks for having us.” Leah added and I smiled as well shaking hands with the aged owner.
“I’m so tired…it was nice seeing you, beautiful. We should spend more time during your stay here.” Leah said and I nodded in agreement.
We bid each other good night and goodbye and just as I got into the car waiting for Lucas, he seemed to have other plans.
“Good night. I will seee you later at home.” Before I could say anything, he kissed my forehead and waved shitting the car door.
