Lyra

I should stay in Ronan’s room.

He told me to. He said it in that unshakeable Alpha tone that normally freezes people in their tracks. But the moment the wards start humming againlow, sharp, wrongmy stomach drops. It isn’t a sound you ignore. It’s a warning you feel in your bones.

So I leave.

The hallway is already filling with movement. Pack members step out of their rooms, some flickering at the edges, some almost solid. No one speaks, but every face turns toward the same direction: the border. Something is happening out there Something big enough to wake an entire fortress.

1 follow Ronan’s trail straight into it.

I push through the doorway into the courtyard and then the border clearingand everything hits me at once.

At the clearing, the air is tight. Councilors stand in a halfmoon, robes and ranks and sharp eyes. Marcus is there, composed the way a man composes a lie, and Ronan is between them and me, sleeve rolled back, the mark on his shoulder raw where I bit him. Seeing it is like a physical tether; something in me clicks into place. I feel claimed and furious in the same heartbeat.

You woke the Council for this?a Councilor snaps. Marcus, you roused us at dawn.

Marcus’s mouth is a thin line. She crossed into Blackfang land,he says. He says it as if the idea itself is proof. He looks at me the way an appraiser looks at an object.

Ronan doesn’t argue. He lifts his sleeve higher. She stands here,he says. At my right. That’s your proof.”

Murmurs run through the circlesurprise, calculation, interest. The head Councilor glances at Marcus with hard eyes. You brought us because of a claim on your daughter?

She’s notshe belongs to me,Marcus answers before he thinks. The possessiveness is a bare thing.

I step forward because if I do not speak I will dissolve into whatever fear has been tracking me my whole life. No,I say, and my voice surprises me with how steady it feels. He owes me an apology.

Marcus laughs like a man who never practices humility. Apologize? To you? For what exactly? I’m most things but stupid isnt one of them

Yes.The single syllable falls between us like a hammer. Kneel. I am your Luna Queen, mated to your Alpha King. Apologize for selling me. For handing me to strangers. For treating me like a thing.

Marcus bares his teeth at me. You want me to kneel?he spits. Then prove you’re worth kneeling to. I invoke the old law. A dominance challenge.”

Gasps ripple through the pack.

The Council stiffens.

Everyone knows what that means:

Two wolves fight. One wins. The loser submits. No interference. No mercy.

Marcus doesn’t wait for anyone to confirm.

He shifts instantly.

His body snaps and breaks in front of mebones lengthening, ribs twisting, fur ripping through skin. He hits the ground on four legs, huge and snarling, white foam stringing from his teeth.

He is already charging.

My heart slams. My wolf surges up so fast I choke. My vision blurs, my spine arches, and-

Pain detonates.

My knees hit the ground as my back cracks loud enough to echo. My ribs cave inward, then burst outward. My fingers stretch, break, reform, claws punching through my skin. My jaw unhinges, my teeth lengthen, my scream warps into a growl.

It is not graceful.

It is not gentle.

It is a body being rebuilt from the inside out.

My wolf forces her way out of me, ripping through bone and muscle until the world tilts

-and I land on four feet.

Breathing as a wolf for the first time.

Black fur, thick and heavy, silver rippling through the edges. Larger than I should be. Larger than Marcus expected. The pack gasps. The Council stares.

Marcus freezes for half a second.

Then attacks.

He slams into me from the side. His claws rip into my ribs. Hot blood sprays across the dirt. I snarl and lunge at his throat, teeth snapping shut around fur. He twists, ripping free before I can crush down.

He leaps againstraight at my neck.

I rear up, slam my weight into him, and the impact cracks through his spine. He stumbles. I bite into his shoulder and shake hard. Flesh tears. He yelpsangry, not hurt enough.

He snaps at my face. His teeth clip my eye. Pain explodes white.

Through the chaos, Ronan’s voice hits my mind-

Don’t die.

It isn’t loud.

It isn’t panicked.

It’s raw and helpless.

I snarl and throw Marcus off me.

We circle each other, both bleeding. I taste iron. I taste fury. I taste years of being small.

Marcus lunges for my throatpredictable.

Chapter 18

I duck under him, clamp my jaws around his back leg, and bite down with everything I have.

Bone cracks.

He collapses, howling.

He tries to rise.

Fails.

Snaps at me desperately.

1 pin him.

My weight crushes his ribs into the dirt. My teeth press to the side of his neckright over the artery.

One bite would end him.

I don’t bite.

I command.

Shift.

The word leaves my wolf like a physical blow.

Marcus’s body shudders. His wolf form spasms, collapses, and shrinks violently. Bones twist back. Fur retracts. He shifts into human shape whether he wants to or not.

He ends up on his knees, gasping, shaking.

And completely, irrevocably defeated.

The pack goes silent.

The Council watches like they’re witnessing history rewrite itself.

Marcus lifts his head and sees memassive, bleeding, standing over him like a shadow that refuses to move.

He knows what comes next.

He bows.

Slow. Trembling. Humiliated.

Iapologize,he grinds out. Luna.

The Council exhales sharply.

Some of the flickering pack members kneel.

Others stare at me with shock or awe. Some with pity.

I shift backpainfully, bones reversing, skin reformingand Ronan moves the moment I’m human again, shrugging his cloak over me before anyone sees too much. His hand is warm at my back, steady even though he can’t intervene in the fight.

You were extraordinary,he whispers against my temple.

Ronan steps forward, placing himself between me and Marcus as I pull his cloak tighter around my shaking body. His expression is carved from stone, but the fury underneath it is unmistakable.

The challenge is settled,” he says, voice carrying through the clearing. Take Marcus. Leave my territory. And do not

return.

The Council hesitatesconfused, shaken, suddenly aware they’ve witnessed something far bigger than a family dispute.

Ronan’s eyes narrow. You wanted proof of the bond. You have it. You wanted to judge my Luna. Now you’ve seen what she

is.

His chin lifts toward the flickering pack members forming around the courtyardhalfvisible silhouettes, watching with silent, eerie intensity.

But hear this clearly,he continues, voice dropping to something cold enough to freeze bone. If any of you set foot on my land again without invitationHe gestures to the translucent wolves and warriors, their eyes glowing faintly. “…I won’t stop them.”

A ripple of fear moves through the Council ranks.

One Councilor nearly drops his scroll.

Another grabs Marcus by the arm, hauling him upright despite his limp. Wewe understand, she stammers. This matter is concluded.

They gather fast, frantic, almost tripping over each other as they retreat toward the tree line.

No one looks back.

No one dares.
