Breed Me Cursed Alpha (Lyra and Ronan) novel Chapter 6

My Children, My War

HANNAH’S POV:

THAT SAME DAY:

We arrived at the mansion Lucas picked out and it was a beautiful sight. The kids had jolted up from their rest because the driver almost ran over a cat and now they were wild awake looking at the entrance with awe.

“Mummy, we are going to live here?” Amelia asked and I glanced at Lucas who was smiling proudly to himself.

He had convinced me a few days before that rather than staying at a hotel, I should purchase a mansion which would serve as one of my many properties in different countries I had visited. I was skeptical since I wasn’t planning on ever returning back to this country and ever seeing those people but I needed to officially divorce him…and get a few business deals done.

I simply glanced through the pictures of the house Lucas had shown me without paying any attention to it but now, I was glad he had picked it out. It was bigger than I expected but not loud or showy, just perfect.

The gates rolled away and the beautiful bright lights lit up the house, displaying the fountain, garden, wide

entrance.

Lucas looked back at me. “Welcome home.”

I didn’t answer. I was too busy staring.

The house itself was two stories high, with tall glass windows and warm cream walls that almost glowed under the evening sun. A small balcony peeked out from above, and near it, I noticed rose bushes climbing their way along the stone.

“Come on.” I alighted out the car and the twins followed behind me and I held their hands in my hand.

The front door was heavy, dark wood, with simple gold handles. Inside, the air smelt new and clean, clean linen, and something citrusy, maybe lemon. The floors were smooth and pale under our feet. There was space. Air.

Peace.

“Mummy, I love it already!” Amelia jumped in excitement and I smiled as she ran off with Andrew exploring the place.

“Quit all that running!” I cautioned because I had recently watched a video of a child who was running and broke his leg. I mean before the video, I always cautioned them but now I was just more stern.

I walked further in and to the left was a living room with soft cream couches, soft light from hidden corners, a low coffee table with books already stacked neatly in the middle. Past it was a piano, tucked near the tall windows that showed off a quiet back garden.

“Welcome back, Mrs Jones. I am Mister Flynn, and I was employed as the head of staff and I promise to ensure everything you need is provided.” He introduced me and I stretched out my hand and shook his hand. He looked like he was in early fifties with white hair and he looked like he really did get the job done.

We all continued walking around, and the kitchen was open and modern, with a big island in the middle and gold handles on the drawers. Everything looked untouched, but inviting like it was waiting for someone to finally call it home.

Upstairs, the kids ran to their rooms that had already been set up. Amelia’s had a wall full of books and soft pink sheets. Andrew’s was covered in navy and forest green, with a space-theme lamp by the bedside. I smiled seeing the bright smiles on their face and they were already jumping on the beds.

My room was at the far end of the hallway.

It had a soft king-sized bed dressed in snow-white linen, a cream rug under my feet, and big curtains that fluttered slightly from the breeze coming in through the open window. I stepped into the bathroom and stared at the giant tub by the window, the kind you could sink into and disappear for hours.

Everything was simple. Quiet. Clean. No one had lived in it yet, but it already felt like it had been waiting for me.

Lucas appeared at the doorway, hands in his pockets.

“I figured if you were ever going to walk back into this country… you needed a place that didn’t remind you of what it took to leave. So what do you think?” He asked, looking up at me.

I didn’t say anything. I walked to the balcony and looked out at the city lights blinking faintly in the distance. It wasn’t the mansion that made my chest tighten…it was the silence. Safety. The freedom to just be.

I turned back to him with a small smile. “It’s perfect.”

He nodded. “Then rest. Because once the world realizes you’re back… they’ll come knocking.” He said before closing the door and walking up.

His words made my heart skip a beat but I already knew that. Especially Elijah….What if he would out about the kids? Would he want to be in their life or would he try to take full custody of them? It didn’t even matter because I would use all the power I had to ensure he wouldn’t. This was no longer a battle between the powerful and the one who couldn’t fight for herself, it was war.

LATER THAT NIGHT.

After Lucas left and the door clicked shut, I took a shower after checking up on the kids. They had showered and were now tucked in their beds. I stood on the balcony and watched the city blinking in the distance, loud and alive, but here… up here, in this new life, there was only quiet. I wrapped my arms around myself and leaned against the railing. The air was warm with a cool breeze brushing past my skin like an old friend.

I didn’t know what tomorrow would bring, but for the first time in a long time, I wasn’t afraid,

“Mummy?” Amelia’s soft voice broke my thoughts. She stood in the doorway in her little pink pajama set, her curls all fluffy from the shower, clutching her teddy bear.

“Yes, baby?” It was now past eleven and I was getting tired. I glanced at her with concern.

HANNAH’S POV:

“I can’t sleep.” She answered cutely and I puckered out my lip.

I walked over and crouched to her level, brushing her hair gently out of her face. “Why not?”

“I think it’s too quiet. The old house had the crickets. And Uncle Lucas used to snore,” she said seriously but I couldn’t remember hearing any crickets.

I was too amused so I simply asked. “Do you want to sleep in my bed tonight?”

She nodded quickly. “Just for tonight.” She made it clear as her classmates at school bragged at being able to sleep alone, so she loved being able to sleep alone.

“Alright.” I answered.

She crawled onto my bed without hesitation, claiming a corner as if it were hers by birthright. I kissed her forehead and pulled the covers over her and she snuggled into me.

A few minutes later, there was a knock. Andrew.

“I can’t find my comic book,” he said, arms crossed, a deep frown on his face.

“I think it’s still in your suitcase,” I answered standing up and walking over to him.

He nodded but didn’t leave. Instead, he looked up at me and asked in a quieter voice, “Are we really going to stay here forever?”

I knelt down. “Do you want to stay here?”

He shrugged and stared at me with a squinted eyes. “I don’t know. I just… I feel like we’re hiding. Like there’s a big secret and you’re not telling us.”

I stared at him, speechless for a moment. He was only six, but sometimes he spoke like a much older boy. Too smart for his age. Too observant.

“I’ll tell you everything,” I promised. “Just not all at once. Is that okay?”

He hesitated, then nodded slowly. “Okay. But… I don’t want anyone to take you away from us.”

I frowned deeply and hugged him tightly, heart aching. I pulled away and stared into his eyes and reassured him saying, “No one will. I promise. It’s just us now.”

That seemed to satisfy him for the moment. We returned to his room while Amelia was fast asleep in my bed and I helped him find his comic book, and he returned to his room without another word. I was certain he was too tired to even say anything. He was probably just going to scan through the comic before falling asleep.

Back in my room, Amelia had fallen asleep on top of the sheets, teddy tucked under her chin. I gently adjusted her and dimmed the lights.

I walked to the wardrobe and opened it. All that conversation had the sleep in my eyes disappearing,

Everything was carefully arranged-Lucas really had gone all out. There were already some of my things here, moved from storage and other homes. Neatly folded sweaters. My heels lined up like little soldiers. Dresses I hadn’t worn in years. Everything smelled faintly like lavender and safety.

I reached for a silk robe and wrapped it around myself before stepping out again. The hallway was quiet. Staff must have retreated to their quarters.

I found Lucas in the kitchen, leaning over the island counter with a glass of wine in his hand staring straight ahead. Lucas was a tall man with a messy blonde hair and green eyes, he was often mistaken for a model with his chiseled jaw line, perfect facial features.

I thank God everyday for the day I met him.

“You couldn’t sleep either?” I asked announcing my presence.

He looked up, smiling. “Didn’t even try. Thought I’d let the house sink in first.”

I pulled out a stool across from him and took the offered glass of water he poured me.

“Thank you,” I appreciated quietly.

“For?” He raised his eyebrow in questioning.

“This. Everything. The house. The patience. Believing in me when I didn’t.”

Lucas leaned back on the counter and smiled. “You believed in yourself. I just helped you see it.”

We sipped in silence for a bit.

“Amelia just said she’s used to your snoring and the house is way too quiet.” I broke the silence causing both of us to burst out laughing.

“She didn’t…” He said in between his laugh and I nodded confirming she did.

When our laughter died down, I stared straight ahead.

“I think the kids are scared,” I murmured and he let out a breath.

“They’ll adjust. You’ve built a whole world around them that isn’t filled with fear. You think they don’t feel that?” He pointed out and I thought about it for a second.

“They asked if we’re staying forever.” I pointed out.

“And what did you say?” He asked.

“I told them yes.” I smiled. “And then panicked internally.”

Lucas chuckled. “You’re doing better than most.”

I tilted my head. “Do you think it’s going to get ugly? Once he knows?”

Lucas’s face turned serious. “Probably. But you’re not the same woman you were seven years ago. And you’re not alone anymore.”

“I know,” I said, nodding slowly. “I don’t feel powerless anymore. That’s new.”

He tapped his glass against mine. “To new beginnings.”

“To clean slates.”

We sat a while longer until the air felt heavier with sleep. I returned upstairs, checked on Andrew, then slid into bed next to Amelia.

The sheets were soft and cool. My eyes fluttered closed, but my mind stayed awake.

Would Elijah recognize them right away? Do I hide them from him?

Would he demand a paternity test? Would he want to see them… or would he turn cruel again, try to use them against me?

I’d protected them for six years. Never once did I speak his name around them. Never once did I let my past touch their innocence.

But now, we were back where it all began.

I looked down at Amelia as she slept peacefully beside me, her tiny chest rising and falling.

“I won’t let anyone hurt you,” I whispered.

The house groaned softly in the distance…pipes settling, the floorboards expanding with warmth. But nothing about it felt haunted.

We were safe.
