Austin had no intention of dragging the argument on any further. “I’m not giving you a second chance. The rule is clear–if you ever hurt her in any way, whether you meant it or not, you’re done. That’s final.”
A sudden chill settled over the space between them.
Elijah’s lips curled into a sharp, knowing grin. “And what if Winona decides on her own that she wants this?”
Austin’s gaze turned cold as steel. “Then I’ll keep pushing until she changes her mind.”
Elijah hadn’t expected Austin to be this unyielding.
Without any sisters of his own—and barely any connection with the cousin he did have—he had no frame of reference for how fiercely a man could defend his sister when judging a potential partner.
Austin didn’t linger. After delivering his warning, he turned and left without another word.
When he returned home, he went straight to see his grandfather.
“Grandpa, you’ve been in close contact with Elijah lately.”
Henry felt a flicker of guilt and pretended not to understand. “Who are you talking about?”
Austin wasn’t about to let him dodge the question. “The guy who hurt Winona. Her ex.
“When she was away on that trip, you even told him where she was going.”
Caught off guard, Henry cleared his throat, trying to hide his discomfort. “Austin, Elijah isn’t a bad person. He genuinely cares about your sister. Why are you so against him?”
“While he was still dating Winona, word got out that he was being lined up for a marriage alliance with another woman. You still call that genuine care?”
Henry was at a loss for words.
There was no convincing argument that could defend Elijah on that point.
“You’re not wrong–he did mess up. But Winona is clearly softening toward him. Can’t you see it? She has feelings for him.”

Austin remained firm. “Then I’ll do everything I can to make sure she lets go of those feelings.”
Henry realized he couldn’t outtalk his grandson.
If love could be controlled and directed at will, it wouldn’t truly be love anymore.
In the end, he gave up trying to push the issue. Austin’s own romantic experience was practically nonexistent, so it wasn’t surprising he couldn’t understand.
Meanwhile, Winona’s phone wouldn’t stop buzzing–Elijah was blowing it up nonstop.
“Babe, can we video call tonight? You were so busy earlier you didn’t even have time for me.”
She replied in a cool, detached tone: “No. I’m busy.”
“I miss you. Can you come out for a second? Just one glance, please?”
Winona’s heart skipped. “You’re at my place? Are you out of your mind?”
She had to admit, Elijah was bold. If Austin caught him there, he’d get flattened without hesitation.
“Yeah. Charlie just had surgery. Don’t you want to hear how he’s doing?”
That hit a nerve. She was supposed to be Charlie’s friend, yet both he and his family seemed to trust Elijah more than her.
It annoyed her–Elijah had essentially taken over her friend.
Still, she couldn’t ignore her concern for Charlie.
“Give me ten minutes. Wait for me.”
Looking down at her pajamas, Winona decided there was no need to dress up for him–she wasn’t going to boost his ego.
She stepped out in a strawberry–print nightgown, casually tied up her hair, and added a touch of nude gloss without much thought.
