Sawyer studied the man, who looked completely overwhelmed, and spoke calmly, “Elijah, pushing too hard can work against you. Think of a kite–you need some slack in the line. If you keep pulling it tight, it will just crash. Ease off a little. You may get a better result that way.”
Elijah maintained a composed expression, silently reflecting on those words. Perhaps he had been overdoing it and needed to take a step back.
For three days, Elijah did not reach out to Winona. At first, she barely noticed or cared.
Then her grandfather mentioned that Elijah might be returning to his hometown.
That made her chest tighten.
“Grandpa, how would you know that?”
Since when is Grandpa so close to Elijah?
Henry decided it was time to be honest with her. “Elijah opened a cafe nearby. He keeps it stocked with all my favorite things. I visit occasionally to play chess with him. Didn’t you know?”
“I didn’t go looking for him,” Henry added. “But he went out of his way to bring over part of his old man’s collection. It would’ve been rude not to stop by.
“He’s not the type to flatter people, but he follows through on what he says.”
Winona remained silent.
How does Grandpa end up speaking so highly of him?
“He mentioned he’s going back to Denton to visit his parents and spend Thanksgiving with them. After that, he probably won’t be around as often–especially since you’ve been rather distant.”
Austin stayed quiet and filled a bowl of soup for his sister. “Have it while it’s still hot.”
Winona said nothing, lost in thought.
Later that evening, she went to her grandfather’s room. “Grandpa, has he already gone?”
Henry chuckled softly to himself. It looked like Elijah’s feelings for Winona weren’t one–sided
after all.

“He’s taking a flight tomorrow morning. That’s the only one scheduled to Denton.”
The message couldn’t have been more obvious.
Winona returned to her room and collapsed onto her bed.

Part of her wanted to go after him, but she hesitated–and in the end, she couldn’t fall asleep.
She opened their chat and scrolled through it, feeling increasingly irritated. He was so inconsistent.
He had only just begun pursuing her, and now he was already thinking about stopping.
Still annoyed, she eventually drifted off.
When she woke up, it was already ten o’clock.
She remembered checking the schedule the night before–there was only one flight to Denton, leaving at 10:30. It was already too late to catch it.
A heavy sense of disappointment settled over her as she stared at her empty phone.
He had left without saying anything to her.
She went through her usual morning routine in a daze, then sat at the table, absentmindedly eating a sandwich.
Henry glanced at the clock and asked, “Winona, aren’t you going to work today?”
The television in the living room was on when a breaking news alert suddenly interrupted the program.
“Breaking News: Flight MU586 bound for Denton experienced a cabin pressure issue and was forced to make an emergency landing in Tenvora. Ten passengers suffered minor injuries, and one passenger is in critical condition. Families of passengers are advised to contact the airline immediately.”
Winona’s fork slipped from her hand and clattered to the floor.
“Grandpa, was Elijah on that flight?”
Henry frowned slightly. “I believe so.”
“Don’t rush,” he added. “Have the driver take you to the airport to check. Stay safe on the way, and don’t panic.”
