As a mother herself, watching a five-year-old child cry so miserably, Hester simply couldn't be completely heartless.
Besides, Caden was truly innocent in all of this. He was Adrian's son—the precious great-grandson Bella had finally found just before she died.
Even though he had called Melody 'Mommy' for five years, it wasn't a choice he had made for himself.
The architect of this entire disaster was Julian.
Hester pressed her lips together and let out a soft, defeated sigh.
She stepped forward, bending down slightly to meet Caden's tear-filled eyes. "We've only met a few times. Why did you want to come find me?"
Caden sniffled, his tears pausing as his big, wet eyes locked onto Hester's.
He rubbed his nose, using his small sleeve to wipe away his tears, and spoke in a tiny, fragile voice. "Great-Grandma and Daddy both said you are a very good person. And... and I think you're really good, too..."
Hester froze slightly.
She could guess Bella's intentions. The old woman had likely trusted that Hester wouldn't take her anger out on an innocent toddler, hoping to secure Caden one last genuine protector in the world.
But Julian's angle was entirely different.
From the very beginning, Julian had locked Caden away at Silverstream Villa, installing Melody as the maternal figure. He had clearly decided that Hester was completely unfit to raise the boy.
For five entire years, Caden didn't even know he had a legal adoptive mother. Julian had actively ensured they never bonded as mother and son.
Now, Julian was suddenly telling Caden she was a 'good person'? It was purely because his lies had exploded in his face. Terrified that she would direct her rage at the child, Julian had manipulated Caden into seeking her out.
Julian knew she wouldn't have the heart to slam the door on a crying toddler.
He knew her so well. He knew that for Bella's sake, she would offer the boy a sliver of warmth.
Hester found it incredibly ironic. Julian knew her intimately, yet he had still spent years systematically doing the exact things that would shatter her heart.
