Hester’s grip on her phone tightened slightly.
"Are you calling because you're worried about him?"
"I'm merely confirming the situation." Hester's face was utterly blank, her voice carrying the chill of a winter storm. "He can die for all I care, but he shouldn't think he can just dump Caden onto me as a parting gift. I owe him nothing, and I certainly owe the Weston family nothing."
On the other end, Declan sighed in exasperation. "If Julian could hear you say that, he’d probably wake up out of sheer anger."
"If he dies, I'm a widow. Honestly, it saves me the paperwork."
With that, Hester hung up the phone.
Lena stood off to the side, too terrified to even breathe loudly.
Hester looked down at Caden sleeping in her arms. She pressed her lips together and instructed, "Tell Neil to go to Caden's kindergarten and investigate if anyone has been bullying him there. If he comes up with nothing, then he needs to hunt down that nanny who abruptly quit from Silverstream Villa."
"Understood!"
...
In a VIP suite at Veridian Private Hospital.
Declan listened to the dial tone on his phone and shook his head.
Slipping the phone into his pocket, he walked over to the bed, staring down at the unconscious Julian. "You really brought this on yourself, man."
Suddenly, Julian's eyelashes fluttered, and his fingers twitched against the sheets.
Declan’s face lit up. "Julian?"
The man on the bed furrowed his brows. A moment later, his heavy eyelids slowly dragged open.
"You're finally awake!" Declan exclaimed in overwhelming relief. "If you had woken up two minutes earlier, you could have caught your wife's call."
Julian felt like he had been asleep for centuries, trapped in a long, chaotic nightmare.
Before his mind could even fully boot up, Declan's words registered. He instantly frowned. "Hester called me?"
