The hospital lobby buzzed with a steady stream of people.
Hester looked at Julian, a cold mockery swimming in her beautiful eyes. "Julian, I thought your love for Caden was priceless. But looking at it now, it seems you're perfectly willing to use anyone to get what you want, even him."
Julian stared at her with dark, heavy eyes, his thin lips pressed into a tight line.
He offered no argument, let alone an explanation.
Hester couldn't have cared less.
She only needed to make her stance clear.
"I'll pay for the caregiver, the emotional distress, and the medical bills. Given the situation, I am grateful that Caden saved me, but the only return I can offer is strictly business—financial compensation. Anything beyond that is out of the question."
Having said her piece, Hester turned and walked away.
Julian watched her retreating silhouette, his eyes darkening into shadows.
...
Hester thought she had made herself perfectly clear and that the matter with Caden was completely settled.
She never expected Lena to show up at her door with Caden the very next day.
"Mr. Weston went on a business trip. Caden was throwing a fit, crying for you. I honestly didn't know what else to do."
Standing outside the door, Lena held Caden on her back, looking at Hester with utter helplessness.
Caden rested his chin on Lena's shoulder, gazing at her with big, tearful eyes. "Pretty Lady, I'll be good. I promise I won't bother you."
Hester let out a soft sigh.
She could coldly reject Julian without a second thought, but when it came to Caden, she simply couldn't bring herself to do it.
"Come in," Hester finally compromised.
...
Once inside, Lena gently set Caden down on the sofa.
Caden was wearing a set of cotton pajamas. One pant leg was rolled up, revealing the fresh bandages wrapped around his small calf.
Hester asked Celeste to wash some fruit, then walked over and sat down beside Caden, gently stroking his head. "Does your leg still hurt?"
