"I wouldn't say forget about it completely, but it definitely slows things down."
"Alright," Hester said. "Tell your friend not to stress too much. I'm in no rush at the moment."
"How have you been these past few days?" Gael Montgomery asked. "Neil mentioned that Julian fired Celeste for disrespecting you. Did they hire a new nanny and a governess over at Silverstream Villa?"
"Yes, Caden and Seraphina have been getting along well lately."
Gael let out a dramatic sigh. "Blood really is thicker than water. It's only been a few days, and even without her memory, they're playing the perfect mother-son duo. This is exactly why women should never sign up to be stepmothers."
Hester smiled but remained silent.
She didn't exactly consider herself Caden's stepmother. The boy had saved her life once, and she simply wanted to look out for him however she could.
"I have to let you go," Gael said through the receiver. "If I'm away from my desk for more than five minutes, Neil is going to accuse me of slacking off again."
"Alright," Hester replied with a helpless sigh. "Thanks for everything, Gael."
"It is hard work. Staring at that guy's icy, expressionless face all day is going to give me an ulcer. You owe me dinner next time we meet. Seriously, I have to run. Bye!"
The line went dead before Hester could reply.
Hester set her phone down, rested a hand gently over her stomach, and walked into her walk-in closet.
She opened the wardrobe and pulled out a fresh set of cotton pajamas.
After a warm shower, she slipped into bed early.
With Caden and Seraphina growing closer by the day, the little boy hadn't asked Hester to read him a bedtime story in two nights.
Hester actually welcomed the break, finding herself asleep by nine o'clock every evening.
Well-rested, well-fed, and emotionally stable, her complexion had visibly improved, glowing with a healthy radiance.
The frequency of her restless nights had also plummeted.
If Seraphina didn't interfere, maintaining this peaceful existence until the baby was born and the divorce papers were finalized wouldn't be a bad way to live.
But she knew all too well that keeping Seraphina at bay was an impossible dream.
