Julian stared at Hester, catching the sharp bite of anger in her words. He let out a helpless sigh. "That's not what I meant."
"Whatever. My stance is crystal clear. I am not stepping foot in that hospital. From now on, keep me out of anything involving Seraphina. And if she actually survives this, please control her. Keep her away from me. I don't need a sister-in-law in my life."
"Do you really have to be so ruthless?" Julian pinched the bridge of his nose, sounding utterly exhausted. "Even if it's just for Caden's sake, couldn't you show her a little grace?"
"Have I not shown her grace? Because of Caden, I gave her chance after chance. And what was the result?"
Hester's eyes practically burned with mockery. "The result proved that she doesn't deserve a single ounce of my grace!"
"You—"
"And stop using Caden to guilt-trip me!" Hester cut him off, her tone razor-sharp. "Seraphina didn't give a damn about Caden when she decided to pull this stunt. She didn't care if her dying would destroy her son. What gives you the right to demand that I care?"
Julian looked at her—so unyielding, so fiercely articulate and cold—and a complicated storm brewed in his eyes.
After a long pause, he finally lowered his voice.
"I just believe adult issues shouldn't drag kids down. You two bonded so well recently; I honestly thought he meant something to you."
"I admit Caden is a wonderful kid. But the situation is different now. Seraphina is back, and they've reunited. Are you really that blind, Julian?"
Julian froze.
Hester continued, "Compared to me, he has entirely accepted her as his real mother. He might be little, but he's not stupid. The fact that he refuses to leave her side proves it. Between me and her, he knows exactly who his priority is. A five-year-old sees the reality clearer than you do!"
Julian stared at her blankly, his lips pressed into a tight line.
Taking advantage of his distraction, Hester yanked her hand free, rubbing her bruised wrist.
She took a deep breath to steady herself and spoke with total composure.
