"Caden, it's okay," Fiona's voice was gentle, steering the conversation with practiced patience. "Just tell me whatever comes to mind."
Caden hesitated, his small fingers twisting the fabric of his hospital gown. Finally, he whispered, "Caden... on the boat... came back... felt sick..."
Fiona shot a glance at Hester. Hester’s brow furrowed.
Focusing back on the little boy, Fiona asked, "So, this little figure here is you?"
Caden nodded emphatically.
"And do you still feel sick now?"
He looked at Fiona, thought for a moment, and shook his head. "Mommy... hit... Caden... Caden was scared. Eyes... saw red..."
The broken sentences were vague, but the words "Mommy hit Caden" were damning enough. It proved Seraphina had laid hands on him the night before.
A fiery rage ignited in Hester’s chest. She whirled on Julian. "What do you have to say for yourself now, Julian?"
Julian stared at Caden, his expression darkening, but he kept his mouth shut, refusing to meet Hester’s eyes.
Furious but mindful of the child, Hester swallowed her scathing remarks.
"Hold on," Fiona murmured, placing a calming hand on Hester’s arm. "Let me ask a few more questions."
"Fine," Hester sighed.
Hearing her voice, Caden turned his head. When he realized Hester was looking at him, his breath hitched. He instinctively lowered his gaze, too terrified to meet her eyes.
Hester’s heart clenched as if crushed by an invisible hand. Her breath trembled. Was Caden... afraid of her?
Fiona noticed his reaction and softly probed, "Caden, do you remember who this lady is?"
Head still bowed, Caden gave a tiny nod.
"Can you tell me who she is?" Fiona coaxed.
