Broken Vows and Buried Twins novel Chapter 33

"Gigi!"

A panicked adult's voice echoed from the direction of the law firm.

Hester looked up to see a middle-aged woman sprinting toward them, looking absolutely frantic.

"Oh, thank goodness!" The woman ran over, dropping to her knees with a heavy sigh. "I only stepped away to use the restroom for a second! How did you wander all the way out here?"

Gigi kept her arms firmly wrapped around Hester, staring silently at the woman with innocent, wide eyes.

Hester spoke up. "Are you family?"

The woman stood up, smoothing her uniform. "Oh, no, I'm just the cleaning lady for the firm. This is Mr. Kane's daughter. She's incredibly attached to him and comes to work with him every day. Whenever Mr. Kane is busy, the rest of the staff takes turns keeping an eye on her."

Ah, that explained it.

"Kids at this age are very curious and don't understand danger," Hester gently pointed out. "It only takes a second of distraction for them to wander off. Please be more careful."

"I know, I know. But Gigi is usually terrified of strangers, so I thought she'd stay put while I was in the bathroom." The woman patted her chest, exhaling deeply. "It was my fault. Thank God she didn't get lost, or my life wouldn't be enough to repay Mr. Kane!"

Hester looked down at the little girl. The girl looked right back, blinked, and called out in that same sweet, soft voice, "Mama~"

"Huh?" The woman stared at the child in shock. "Did Gigi just call you Mama?"

Hester felt a wave of awkwardness. "She's just little. She probably isn't pronouncing her words right."

"You think so?" The woman scratched her head. "Even if she wasn't trying to say 'Mama,' just the fact that she spoke at all is a miracle!"

Hester suddenly remembered Sabrina mentioning Jasper's daughter. She was born prematurely, which led to some developmental delays.

Hester crouched down, studying the little girl closely. She was five, but looked closer to three. Her skin was luminous, and while her cheeks were adorably round, her frame was quite delicate. Still, her beautiful pink princess dress made it painfully obvious just how much Jasper adored and spoiled her.
