"And what exactly were you doing?"
Melody's hand froze as she was wiping her tears. After a heartbeat, she slowly looked up, meeting Julian's gaze. His deep eyes were devoid of any warmth. The sheer coldness in his stare sent a shiver straight down her spine.
"Caden has never been a reckless child," Julian stated, his voice like ice. "Melody, I hope you haven't forgotten the promise you made to me."
Melody's face paled. She quickly furrowed her brows, her tone turning frantic. "Julian, I swear, I've never forgotten my promise! I know it's my fault he got hurt today. Zoe was in the kitchen cooking, and Caden and I were having a snack on the patio. I took a work call—it was an emergency with the company—and I got completely sidetracked. I didn't realize he'd grabbed the paring knife off the table... I'm so sorry. I swear I didn't mean for this to happen."
She buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking as she wept in self-reproach.
Julian watched her, his expression completely unmoved. "If your work at the company is taking up this much of your attention, I'll have Neil hire a professional nanny."
"A professional nanny..." Melody lifted her head, her tear-filled eyes wide with horror. "Julian, I know I messed up today, but he's called me Mom for five years! I love him like my own flesh and blood. Please don't separate us!"
Julian's face remained impassive. "Caden is older now; he needs professional care. I haven't forgotten everything you've done for him over the last five years. Don't worry, even with a nanny around, he'll still think of you as his mother."
"But..."
"My decision is final," Julian said coldly. "Since you're so swamped at work, head back to the office. I'll be taking Caden with me for the next couple of days."
Without waiting for a response, Julian turned and walked down the hospital corridor, holding Caden securely against his chest.
Melody stood completely still, staring at his broad back as he walked away. Her hands curled into tight fists at her sides. She viciously wiped the remaining tears from her face, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom.
She had planned every step so carefully. She had swallowed her pride and played the perfect, devoted mother for five whole years. Now, at the most critical juncture, she absolutely could not afford a single mistake.
Since Julian cared so much about Caden, she would just have to make Hester absolutely despise the boy!
