Broken Vows and Buried Twins novel Chapter 72

“Screech—”

A deafening squeal of tires tore through the air!

The white Panamera jerked to a violent halt. Thrown forward by the momentum, Hester was snapped back hard against her seat by the seatbelt.

"Hester, are you okay?" Gael immediately checked on her friend. "Did you bump your stomach?"

"I'm fine." Hester rested a hand on her abdomen and shook her head.

"Thank God we were wearing our seatbelts, or we'd both have concussions right now!" Gael snapped, unbuckling herself. "Damn it, I'm going to see what kind of psycho drives like that!"

Gael pushed her door open and stormed out, cursing up a storm. Hester unbuckled her belt and followed her out to assess the situation.

The driver's side door of the Maybach swung open, and a tall figure in black stepped out.

Hester stopped dead in her tracks.

The man completely ignored Gael's shouting. A pair of deep, cold eyes—strikingly similar to Hester's—swept over, locking onto her.

Hester's brow furrowed. What was he doing here?

"Did you forget what day it is today?" the man demanded, his tone freezing and laced with reprimand.

Gael frowned, glancing back and forth between Hester and the man. They knew each other?

She stepped closer and lowered her voice. "You know him?"

To have no value meant only one thing—being discarded. For a woman like Miranda, that would be a fate worse than death.

Hester's face darkened, a look of utter disgust filling her eyes. "Cyrus, you and Dad are exactly the same."

Cyrus scoffed. "You are a Carrington. Your marriage to Julian concerns the entire family's financial interests. If it weren't for this mess, do you really think I'd waste my time looking for you?"

Hester knew damn well he didn't want to be here.

The truth was, none of the Carrington siblings gave a damn about each other. Born into a family that worshipped profit above all else, siblings were nothing but lifelong competitors.

When she was little, Hester used to look up to Cyrus. That was until she was six years old. She had accidentally fallen into the deep end of the swimming pool. Cyrus had been the only one around, and she had screamed for him to help her.
