Hester waited for Sabrina to hang up before asking, "What happened?"
Sabrina put her phone down and sighed in exasperation. "Jasper said his daughter spiked a fever, so he has to rush her to the hospital. He had to raincheck on us."
"He's married?"
"No, the kid actually belongs to his high school sweetheart," Sabrina whispered, leaning across the table. "Before his ex died of cancer, she made him promise to take the girl in."
"Wait, so the child isn't biologically his?"
"Not even close!"
Whenever the topic of Jasper's personal life came up, Sabrina couldn't help but shake her head.
"They broke up right after graduation. He went abroad for his master's, and she got married. The story goes she was diagnosed with cancer while pregnant. Since she was having a girl, her in-laws completely abandoned her, and her own parents didn't want the financial burden. Jasper still cared for her, so he paid for all her medical treatments. When she died, no one wanted the baby. So, Jasper adopted her."
Hester's hand instinctively drifted to cover her own flat stomach as she listened.
Sabrina continued, "She was born premature, so she's always been incredibly fragile and tough to raise. I met her once at a dinner party. She's five, but she's so tiny she looks like a toddler. Absolutely gorgeous little girl, though she looks nothing like her mom... Anyway, she gets sick constantly. The doctors said the climate abroad was too harsh for her immune system, so after fighting it for years, Jasper finally decided to move back here permanently for her sake."
To do so much for a child that wasn't even his blood—Hester felt a deep rush of respect for him. If nothing else, Jasper was a man of impeccable character. As for his legal prowess, his reputation spoke for itself.
Hester immediately decided he was the only man she wanted handling her divorce. "Sabrina, tell him to focus on taking care of his daughter. I'm willing to wait."
