By the time Hester and Jasper rushed into the hospital, it was past ten o'clock at night. Lola had just arrived at the emergency room with Gigi.
Gigi had a cooling gel patch plastered across her forehead, her chubby little face flushed bright red from the fever. Jasper hurried over and gently took Gigi from Lola's arms.
The little girl was slipping in and out of consciousness, murmuring "Daddy" over and over.
Jasper tenderly stroked his daughter's burning cheek. "Daddy's here, sweetie. I'm right here."
Hearing her father's voice, Gigi instantly settled down, burying her face into his chest.
Standing to the side, Hester felt her heart break as she watched Gigi's tiny brow furrow in discomfort.
Sabrina had told her that because Gigi was born premature, her immune system was incredibly weak, and she got sick all the time. Jasper hadn't even been back in the country for long, and this was already Gigi's second time falling severely ill. It was absolute torture for a child so small.
Hester turned to Jasper. "Did you ever take Gigi to see Dr. Coleman, the holistic healer I recommended?"
"I've been dealing with a really complex legal case recently, so I just haven't had the time." Jasper sighed heavily. "I was actually planning to squeeze in an appointment for her in the next couple of days."
"Being a single dad while managing a top-tier law firm is an enormous burden." Hester thought for a moment before offering, "If you trust me, why don't I take her for you?"
Jasper hesitated for a second. "Are you sure you can handle it?"
"I can handle it," Hester assured him, then added, "But right now, her fever is dangerously high. Let's see what the ER doctors say first."
Jasper nodded in agreement.
The doctor diagnosed Gigi with a severe viral infection and an inflamed throat. He prescribed a course of oral medications and fever reducers, advising them to take her home and monitor her closely.
Lola went to the pharmacy counter to pick up the prescriptions. While waiting in the lobby, Jasper held Gigi and turned to Hester. "It's late. You should have your driver take you home. You're pregnant; you need to prioritize your rest."
Hester nodded. "Alright. I feel much better knowing Gigi is going to be okay. I'll head out now, and we'll touch base tomorrow."
"Let me walk you to your car."
"No need, my driver is right outside. Taking care of Gigi is the most important thing right now."
Seeing her insistence, Jasper didn't push the issue.
But just as Hester turned to leave, Gigi suddenly woke up.
The moment the little girl opened her eyes, she spotted Hester. Her fever-glazed, red eyes instantly grew wide. "Mama!"
Hester immediately stepped back and gently stroked Gigi's cheek. "You're awake, sweetie. Does it hurt anywhere?"
Gigi pointed a shaky little finger at her mouth. "Hurts."
She figured that after a good cry, the feverish toddler would exhaust herself and fall fast asleep.
But Gigi was acting entirely out of character tonight. It was as if she was terrified that Hester would sneak out the moment she closed her eyes. She lay limp against Hester's chest, her big, round eyes wide open, absolutely refusing to sleep no matter what Hester said.
Hester, Jasper, and Lola—three fully grown adults—spent an agonizing amount of time trying to coax and bribe her, but the little girl stubbornly refused to sleep and refused to let go of Hester.
Finally, with zero alternatives left, Hester agreed to go back to their apartment with them. She hoped that once they were in a familiar environment, Gigi would feel safe enough to finally relax and go to sleep.
Jasper's luxury apartment was less than two miles from his law firm, only a twenty-minute drive from the hospital.
The spacious, three-thousand-square-foot penthouse was impeccably clean and modern. The living room featured a large, plush playmat covered in Gigi's favorite toys.
Lola went to the kitchen to pour some warm water while they prepared to give Gigi her medicine.
Gigi pointed to her bedroom. "Mama, sleep."
Assuming Gigi was finally ready to sleep, Hester carried her into the bedroom.
The room Jasper had designed for Gigi was a pink princess paradise. The custom bed even had motorized safety rails, and the ceiling was fitted with smart LED stars.
Just looking at the absolute care poured into this room, Hester could profoundly feel how deeply Jasper cherished his daughter.
