Broken Vows and Buried Twins novel Chapter 96

Five years. Over one thousand eight hundred days and nights. Grief and despair slowly consumed every corner of Hester’s life.

On the anniversary of their babies' passing, Julian didn't show up until evening. Unable to hold it in, she demanded to know if he even wanted to come. Had he already forgotten their children?

Julian had yelled at her in response, calling her unreasonable, saying that five years of hysteria was enough!

That was the very first time Julian looked at her like she was a lunatic. She had completely broken down. They had the most explosive argument of their lives right in front of the gravestones of their son and daughter.

In the end, he simply threw out a cold, "I'm busy. I don't have time for your hysteria," turned around, and walked away.

The sky had been pitch black, the torrential rain pouring down as his silhouette vanished into the storm.

It wasn't rain. It was every single tear Hester had shed as a mother for her children over those five years.

How could she not resent him?

How could she not hate him?

...

"I've said it before, I don't agree with this method of treatment. Erasing parts of her memory will only provide a temporary fix. Given her current state, she shouldn't undergo any more interventions. I warned you about this in the beginning... I'm sorry, but my abilities are limited. I don't have a better solution."

A clear, professional female voice drifted in and out of her consciousness. On the large bed in the master bedroom, Hester kept her eyes closed, her tear-soaked lashes fluttering. She tried to open her eyes, but her eyelids felt like lead, completely unyielding.

The conversation beside her continued.

"Dr. Fuller makes a valid point. Maybe we should just drop it?"

"We're so close. We can't give up now."

...

Morning arrived. A ray of sunlight pierced through the sheer curtains, spilling into the master bedroom.

Hester threw the words like daggers, threw off the covers, and got out of bed. Barefoot, she marched toward the door.

Julian raised his hand to stop her, but froze just before his fingers could graze her arm.

Hester brushed past him and stormed down the stairs. As her foot hit the final step, she stopped dead in her tracks.

Bella was sitting in her wheelchair, her reddened eyes fixed on Hester.

Their eyes met. Hester’s hands balled into tight fists at her sides. She didn't want to compromise for anyone in the Weston family ever again!

Seeming to sense her resolve, Bella slowly raised a frail hand and gave her a gentle wave. "Child, come over to me."

Hester stared at the old woman, biting her lip hard, and shook her head.

Bella waved again. When she spoke this time, her voice was thick with tears. "Be good. I won't force you to do anything, Hester. I just want to hug you one last time..."
