Claire’s calls kept coming, but I still didn’t pick up. After the last ring, my phone buzzed with a message.
“If I don’t see you soon, don’t blame me for what happens next.”
I stared at her text for a second, but honestly, I just didn’t have it in me to care. I didn’t want to explain, I didn’t care about her threats. All I could think about was getting home and finding Darleen.
I jumped in the car and drove like my life depended on it. By the time I made it home, Diana was already talking to the police. I handed them every bit of info I had about Darleen, and they started pulling up security footage, trying to track her movements.
Diana pressed a letter into my hand. I recognized Darleen’s handwriting right away.
“Lambert, I’m gone. Please don’t look for me. I promise, I’m not doing anything stupid. I’m just heading back to where I belong. Don’t worry about me.
We were lucky, you know. I got to be your mom, and we got to share some of the happiest, most important moments of our lives. For that, I’m so grateful.
You always said you should thank me, but it’s me who should thank you. Thank you for finding me, for making my life so full, for giving me the chance to be a mother. Thank you, truly.
If you really care about me, let me go. I have my own life to live, and yours is just beginning. We’ll each move forward in our own way. This is just a short goodbye. Your life is wide open. Go and live it, bravely…”
