Building Her Throne Burying My Heart (Claire) novel Chapter 128

Her voice cut through the line, loud and cold, sharp enough to make me wince. I honestly didn’t have the energy to explain anything to her.

“I asked a friend to drop your stuff off. It should be there soon, so nothing’s going to get delayed.”

I knew Claire would keep calling until she got what she wanted, so I asked Aaron to bring the files to her office. I didn’t think it would be a big deal, but as soon as she heard, she exploded.

“These are confidential company documents, and you just let some outsider handle them? What if something leaks? Can you even handle that?”

The rain outside was coming down harder, each drop making my chest feel heavier. I didn’t want to argue. I didn’t have it in me.

“He’s not the kind of person you think. He doesn’t even care about your company secrets.”

She just laughed, all sarcasm. “Oh, really? And you trust your friends that much?”

I knew what she meant. In her eyes, someone like me—someone who’d lied to her—could only have friends worth just as little.

I did my best to hold back my temper, but for the first time, I pushed back, my voice firm. “Believe whatever you want.”

The rain picked up, slamming against the windows. I couldn’t think about anything except Darleen. Was she out there, getting soaked? Did she have an umbrella? Was she somewhere safe?

I cut Claire off before she could say more. “I’ll explain everything when the time is right. But not now.”

She started yelling, but I didn’t care anymore. I hung up and rushed to the car, desperate to find Darleen.
