I sent Aaron a quick message. “Thanks. My mom’s been found.”
After a bit more chatting, I was so tired I drifted off to sleep right away.
But worry kept creeping in, and in the middle of the night, I got up to check on Darleen. I found her lying there with her eyes shut tight, her whole body shaking. Her face was flushed red. When I touched her forehead, it was burning up. She was feverish and out of it, mumbling words that barely made sense.
“I know… I’ll give him back to you… I won’t stop him…”
“Mom, what are you talking about?” I whispered, gently shaking her arm. “Are you feeling sick? I think we should go to the hospital.”
She didn’t answer, just squeezed her eyes shut, obviously in pain and barely aware of what was happening.
I rushed to wake up Diana, and together, we threw some things into a bag while I called for an ambulance.
When we got to the emergency room, the place was packed. There had been a big accident, so all the doctors and nurses were busy with those patients. When a nurse finally came to check on Darleen, she just treated it like any other fever, writing her down for standard care and moving on.
I caught up with another nurse and tried to explain. “Please, could you tell the doctor my mom just finished leukemia treatment? I’m really worried she’s got an infection. Isn’t there any way she could be watched in a special care room?”
The nurse barely looked at me, her hands full of charts. “I’m sorry, but the car accident patients are more critical right now. We have to take care of the worst cases first. Just keep an eye on your mom and let us know if she gets worse.” Before I could say anything else, she was pulled away by another emergency.
I felt completely helpless. There weren’t enough doctors, and I didn’t know anyone to call for help. All I could do was hope Darleen would make it through the night, that things wouldn’t get worse.
