The two glided in that direction for about fifteen minutes; after cresting a snowy ridge the “neighbor” finally came into view.
A sizable camp appeared in the distance.
It was a classic stone-and-wood build with high perimeter walls topped with coils of barbed wire. The main house was a sturdy stone building with smoke billowing from the chimney.
“A Lv. 4 shelter. Not only did they survive, but they hit Level 4 too.”
It was less than two miles away as the crow flies.
This was literally on her doorstep.
“Chirp! Chirp!”
Just as Riley prepared to move closer for a better look, Ash let out a frantic series of warning cries from above.
Riley’s heart skipped a beat; she dug her skis in hard, carving deep ruts into the snow to come to a sudden halt.
Less than sixteen feet ahead of her.
The ground simply ended.
There was no warning, no slope.
It looked as if the earth had been hacked open by a giant blade, leaving a terrifying, bottomless chasm.
Yikes…
Riley slid to the edge and peered down, her skin crawling at the sight.
The ravine was about forty feet wide but seemingly bottomless; the pitch-black void below swallowed the light, and the freezing wind howled upward like a screaming demon.
This bizarre geography was clearly a result of the system’s randomized regional stitching.
“Well, that explains it.”
Riley looked at the camp on the other side.
They were close in distance, but this abyss was a wall of despair that separated them completely.
Unless they had flying mounts or unlocked bridge-building tech, they couldn’t reach her, and she couldn’t reach them.
Riley breathed a sigh of relief.
At this stage of the game, this chasm was the best defensive fortification she could ask for.
“Since it’s a dead end, I don’t need to worry about them.”
With this natural barrier, there was no rush to make contact; she’d already covered her own camp with cameras anyway. If they

didn’t bother her, she wouldn’t bother them.
Riley marked the neighbor’s location on her map and turned back.

Once out of the neighbor’s line of sight, Riley didn’t head straight home.
The Long Night had just ended, and the instance was over.
Just like after the Dungeon instance, the reward chests in the snow-wastes would have refreshed with high-tier loot.
Combining that with the game’s “Law of Conservation”-with so many people dead and resources reclaimed, the system would redistribute that wealth across the map.
Now was the perfect time for a scavenge run.
Riley and Neeko pushed further out.
As they explored, the fractured nature of the world became more apparent.
To her left was the endless, flat white tundra.
But to her right, a small patch of desert had abruptly appeared.
Indeed, it was a patch of frozen desert. Golden sand was trapped beneath translucent ice, and dead cacti stood like ice sculptures next to a crumbling mud wall.
“What desert map did they stitch this in from?”
Riley walked over to investigate.
In a crack between some rocks, a chest radiating a silver light sat quietly.
Silver Chest. 1
“Talk about a buffed drop rate.”
Normally, finding a Bronze chest in the wild was a lucky day; now, a casual stroll yielded a Silver one.
Riley rubbed her hands together and opened the lid.
“Opening Silver Chest…”
