Chapter 224 Life In The Pit
Riley shouted toward the house, and Neeko’s reply came back instantly.
“Ah! Coming, coming! Wait for me, Riley! I’m almost ready.”

A moment later, a petite figure burst from the house; in a flash of pale green light, the small girl expanded into a massive brown bear.
But this bear wasn’t fierce; instead, she wore a bright red scarf Riley had given her, looking incredibly cuddly with several tools strapped to her back.
Pushing open the camp gates, a gust of wind carrying snowflakes hit them full in the face.
But before she’d even taken a few steps, Riley spotted a familiar figure.
In the ring of “wheat fields” outside the stone wall, Joseph was hunched over, carefully using a shovel to clear the furrows.
It had only been a day since planting, but tiny hints of green were already visible.
Against the backdrop of the endless white tundra, that bit of tender green looked almost alien.
Joseph was tending to the plants like they were his own children, occasionally kneeling to block the wind with his calloused hands while checking the sprouts.
“Good morning, my lady!”

Hearing footsteps, Joseph straightened his back; seeing Riley and the giant bear behind her, he jumped in surprise before bowing respectfully.
“No need for all that. Morning,” Riley said with a nod.
She glanced at the wheat. “The growth looks solid.”
“It is! It’s a miracle!” Joseph’s face was flushed with excitement. “I’ve farmed my whole life and I’ve never seen wheat grow this fast in the cold! At this rate, it might be ready for harvest in a
month!”
“I’ll leave it in your hands then.”

Riley pointed toward the mine. “I’m heading over to check the site and dig a bit of coal.”
Joseph’s heart tightened, thinking Riley was there for an inspection. “My lady, Jeff and Rod are already working inside! They’re young but strong, they wouldn’t dream of slacking off!”
“Relax. I’m not a warden, and you aren’t slaves. Just help me out when you’re free,” Riley said with a wave of her hand. “I’m just going to do some digging myself.”
“Ah… alright.” Joseph nodded, his respect for this powerful yet down-to-earth wizard growing even deeper.
Leaving Joseph, Riley and Neeko entered the perimeter of the mine.
As they reached the guardroom by the entrance, Riley arched an eyebrow.
The place was already being kept in perfect order.
Debris had been cleared from the floor, and the cracks in the walls had been stuffed tight with mud and hay to block the draft.
On the crude stone stove, the iron pot Riley gave them was bubbling with melted snow and some rations, releasing a cloud of steam.
In the corner, a large bed had been fashioned out of blankets and furs.
Though simple, it finally had the smell of a “home.”
“Quite tidy.”
Riley nodded in approval.
With a thought, the light in her inventory flashed.
The once-empty stone room was suddenly furnished with two bunk beds, two large wardrobes, the square table, and several chairs.
Riley even produced a Vintage Cast-Iron Coal Stove and placed it in the center. She’d pulled it from a chest; it worked perfectly once connected to a chimney, and since this was a semi-open room, she didn’t worry about carbon monoxide.
“That should keep them warm.”
With that finished, she didn’t linger and led Neeko deeper into the mine shafts.
