Chapter 716 New Defenses

Riley switched back to the build interface.

The material inventory popped up on screen.

Wood, stone, fine steel, iron ingots, magic cores, crossbow parts, rope, animal sinew, srystal ore scraps.

She selected a stretch of ground directly behind the existing wooden defense line.

(Confirm Construction: Basic Stone Wall?]

She confirmed.

The ground rumbled faintly.

A section of gray stone wall rose straight up, running along the inner side of the original wooden barrier. Two natives patching cracks on the wooden wall stumbled back in fright. They watched the stone blocks lock together on their own, faint system runes glowing within the gaps.

“Tell everyone to step back,” Riley said. “Stay clear of the construction zone.”

Joseph rushed outside at once and shouted orders. “Everyone repairing the wall, three steps back! Don’t block the new stone wall!”

The system built at an extremely fast pace.

Segment after segment of stone wall extended along the inner defense line, first sealing off the most dangerous west and south sides. The wooden outer wall continued taking enemy impact while the sturdier stone wall formed behind it, giving every defender a solid second line of protection.

Riley kept upgrading the structure.

[Basic Stone Wall to Tier 2 Stone Wall]

The wall thickened, lined with horizontal reinforcement ridges across its surface.

[Tier 2 Stone Wall to Tier 3 Stone Wall]

A large portion of her stored materials depleted instantly.

The newly completed Tier 3 wall stood far taller than the old wooden barrier. A row of outward-tilting spikes lined the top edge. These were no ordinary wooden thorns. Forged from stone and fine steel with backward barbs, they were built specifically to stop monsters from climbing or latching onto the wall.

Outside, a monster broke through a wooden barrier and tried to scale the wall. Its claws gripped the edge of the new stone wall, only to be pierced straight through the paws by the barbs.

It howled and struggled. Seizing the opening, three guards on the wall loosed their crossbows, driving bolts straight into the monster’s eye sockets.

“It works!”

The tone on the wall shifted completely..

Every shout had been heavy with despair just moments before. Now there was clear confidence in their voices.

Riley continued placing new structures.

[Basic Watchtower

(Crossbow Tower]

She prioritized setting up observation posts on all four sides of the camp.

The first new watchtower rose beside West Watchtower Two. Built from mixed wood and stene, its base locked firmly into the frozen ground. Joseph sent two crossbow guards up top immediately. Their line of sight stretched past the old wooden wall, letting them clearly track monster movements beyond the snowy gully.

As soon as the second crossbow tower finished on the south side, Anna had a crate of fine steel bolts carried up to the platform.

“Don’t waste ammo! Focus on the big beasts and any with spit.type attacks!”

“Got it!”

After maxing out the crossbow towers, Riley selected all movable automated turrets still inside the camp..

These turrets had originally been positioned near the main house, warehouse and tool shed to guard the inner camp. All the monster assaults were hammering the outer defenses, so keeping them inside did almost no good.

Light runes spread across the base of each turret. They detached from their original positions, base and all, then reassembled neatly behind the new stone wall. Gears and locking slots calibrated automatically, crossbow arms extended, and target-seeking runes lit up.

The second the first turret finished calibrating, it swiveled outward on its own.

Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!

Three consecutive bolts shot out, piercing the neck of a monster gnawing at the wooden wall.

The guards on the wall froze for a second, then erupted in cheers.

Riley checked her inventory again and pressed her lips together.

She had enough resources left for two more automated turrets. Most of these materials were common craft items she’d never stockpiled in huge quantities. She could normally trade for more, but no other players had returned yet, leaving no way to resupply.

She did not hesitate and placed the final two builds.

One new turret settled at the south corner, the other at the east corner. The east side had been where survivors had tried to escape before. The open terrain made it easy for monsters to circle around and ambush the camp’s rear. The new turret’s auto-firing range perfectly covered the dangerous snowy gully.
