Denton nodded and gently told Juliet, “Dad, take Mom outside. I’ll talk to the doctor about the treatment plan and the cost.”
Juliet nodded. She wiped her tears and walked out with Michael.
Outside, she whispered, “Do you think he really buys it? He didn’t seem that shocked.”
“The doctor will explain it,” Michael replied. He thought their acting was flawless. But how could two fools trick a smart child?
Inside the office, Denton looked at the doctor and asked calmly, “Doctor, does late–stage kidney failure usually cause coughing?”
The doctor froze for a second, then explained, “It might. Her immune system is weak. Even a small cold could put her life at risk.”
Denton nodded, his face full of innocence. “Doctor, do you know what happens if someone falsifies medical records? Whoever asked you to do it, if I call the police right now, this diagnosis and everything you just said will be evidence. You’re a department head at a public hospital, right? Probably due for a promotion in a few years. If something like this ends up on your record … ”
The doctor’s face turned pale instantly. He panicked and raised his voice on purpose. “Young man, what are you implying?”
“You just need to tell me who asked you to do this. I won’t press charges. But if you want my parents to hear us, I will call the police.”
The doctor’s heart dropped. As expected for a Lincoln, although this kid was truly angry, Denton’s presence was intense at just nineteen.
Denton looked at him quietly, giving him a chance to make the right choice.
The doctor clenched his teeth. Yes, the Lincolns could offer him some benefits, but he had worked hard for years to build his reputation. He couldn’t throw it all away. “It was your parents who came to me,” he finally confessed. “And someone from your family also. approached me.”
Denton nodded. “I understand. Thank
you,
doctor.”
He stood up and walked out of the examination room, holding the medical report.
The moment he stepped into the hallway, Juliet Started crying again on purpose.

Michael rushed over, looking anxious. “Denton, how much is your mom’s treatment going to cost?”
“One million,” Denton said calmly.
Michael pretended to be shocked. “One million? Where are we supposed to get a million? I couldn’t find that kind of money even if I worked myself to the bone!”
Juliet began to cry louder.
Watching them acting, Denton spoke quietly. “Dad, you don’t have the money, but Grandpa does.”
Michael’s eyes lit up. “Son, have you decided to go home and accept your inheritance?”
money i
“Dad, you’re not willing to go to Grandpa and borrow Mom? One million is just pocket change for him. If you love Mom so much, I’m sure you’d ask him, right?” Denton asked, sounding innocent.
Michael choked on that question, then he snapped angrily. “Everything the family has belongs to Curtis. Curtis would rather see us die. How would he ever give us money?”
“Dad, this is Mom’s life we’re talking about. There’s no real grudge between father and son. If I were you, I’d go begging Curtis. He’d help you,” Denton said, still calm.
Michael’s expression darkened. “Why can’t you sacrifice something for your mother? Even if I begged him till I died, Curtis still wouldn’t give us a dime.”
“How would you know if you don’t try?” Denton shot back in rage. “Or maybe you just don’t love Mom enough. She’s about to die, and you won’t even swallow your pride.”
Michael’s mind went blank, unable to answer.
Juliet reacted faster. Tears streamed down her face as she choked out, “The one million surgery is just the start. I may not live long enough to wait for you to make money. I still want to see you get married, have kids, and let me at least hold my grandbaby.”
She sobbed harder. “What if the surgery doesn’t go well and we need more money? Rehab. medicines, everything costs money. Curtis might help once, but he won’t help twice. Son, please just do it for me.”
Denton nodded slowly. “Fine. I will go home and accept the inheritance.”
Michael and Juliet
ared at him, stunned. “Really?”
