Yolanda smacked Adriana lightly. “You little brat. How do you get all these guys? Matthew’s good–looking too.”
Adriana quickly shut that down. “He’s a jerk.”
Yolanda curled her lips. “So am I.”
“You can’t just lower your standards like that,” Adriana said, wearing a look that said, Please don’t lower yourself.
Yolanda burst out laughing. “What are you thinking? I’m not that desperate.”
“Adriana! Yolanda!” Denton ran up from behind, clearly anxious. “I heard Curtis was in a car accident. I came to see him.”
“You’re the biggest winner if Curtis gets into an accident, aren’t you?” Adriana blocked Denton and shoved him lightly. “He doesn’t want to see you. Leave.”
Denton looked wronged. “Adriana … this has nothing to do with me. I’m just worried about Curtis.”
“If it weren’t for you, he’d still be the CEO of Lincoln Group. Who would dare ram his car then? Just cut the act,” Adriana said loudly.
Denton stood there, looking hurt. He still wanted to explain, but Adriana had already pulled Yolanda away.
Not far away, Savannah walked over and looked at Denton. “No matter what you do, they’ll never truly accept you. Instead of letting them doubt you, prove yourself. Only if you truly lead Lincoln Group beyond Curtis’s achievements will he finally look at you seriously. Otherwise
he’ll always look down on you.”
Denton was silent for a long time before speaking. “Really? As long as I surpass Curtis, he’ll finally see me…”
“People only notice those stronger than themselves.” Savannah nodded.
Denton lowered his head, murmured to himself, then clenched his fists. “I will surpass him!”
Watching Denton turn and leave, Savannah lifted the corner of her mouth and followed after him.

In a corner, Adriana and Yolanda were hiding. After Denton and Savannah left, the two of them nodded knowingly. “I told you Savannah was suspicious. She’s clearly stirring trouble.”
Adriana nodded as well. “But Savannah is Ernest’s daughter. Ernest watched Curtis grow up. How could his daughter-”
Yolanda patted Adriana on the shoulder. “Never trust anyone. Just like right now, I might be standing on your side this second, and I could flip the next.”
Adriana looked at Yolanda nervously. “Don’t scare me.”
Yolanda laughed. “It’s a metaphor. A metaphor, okay? Relax. My dad’s little business could go bankrupt tomorrow, and I’d still survive. I don’t need to sell anyone out.”
Adriana hugged Yolanda, touched. “Yolanda, you’re really the best.”
“Then dump Curtis and be with me,” Yolanda teased.
Adriana laughed as she walked back with Yolanda and ran into Matthew on his way out.
Matthew looked at Adriana, wanting to speak but holding back.
From far away, he’d seen Adriana and Yolanda laughing together.
During those four years with him, Adriana had no friends, no social life. She’d been trapped b his side, trapped in that house…
He couldn’t remember her ever laughing like that.
“Adriana,” Matthew called out, his voice hoarse.
He truly regretted it. If I treated Adriana better back then… would things have turned out differently?
“Mr. Langford, take care,” Adriana said calmly. She took Yolanda’s hand and walked past Matthew without a hint of hesitation.
Matthew lowered his gaze and smiled bitterly.
Sometimes he wondered if Adriana would come back to him if Curtis died.
But now, he hesitated. Even if Curtis died, Adriana probably wouldn’t return to him.
Inside the hospital room.

Yolanda had left. Adriana went in alone. “Before Harold passed, he arranged for a girl named Savannah to stay by Denton’s side. That Savannah seems problematic. She’s deliberately trying to drive a wedge between you and Denton.” Adriana told Curtis what she’d seen that day.
Curtis nodded. “I’ll look into it.”
“And Denton…” Adriana asked softly, a bit troubled. “There are too many people around him trying to stir things up. Can he really be trusted? I was pretty cold to him today to test Savannah…”
Curtis smiled and squeezed Adriana’s hand. “There’s no need to dwell on that. Denton isn’t stupid. He’s extremely perceptive. There’s no way he wouldn’t sense someone trying to sow discord. You can’t wake someone who’s pretending to be asleep, and you can’t hold on to someone whose heart is already gone.”
Curtis wasn’t too hung up on whether Denton would turn bad one day.
That kid lacked love. He craved it too much.
There was a scale in his heart. One thought could turn him into a demon, another into a saint.
But in the end, the choice was his.
“Curtis…”
At the door, Denton cautiously poked his head in, glanced around, pulled his baseball cap lower, and slipped inside. He’d even brought Adriana a box of freshly cut watermelon.
“Adriana, this is for you,” Denton said with an innocent smile. It looked like he’d shaken the spies and circled back.
