Irene’s mouth twitched. “You don’t have to put it that terrifyingly… The people behind this will be watching us, and once they’ve got the facts, they’ll come after you. But we’re still in the state, so they won’t dare act too openly. As long as you stay alert enough, there usually won’t be major problems.”
Mae nodded. “It’s fine. Missions I’ve done before were a hundred times more dangerous than this. I don’t care about life or death. You don’t need to worry about me.”
Irene paused, then nodded. This girl was surprisingly open–minded. “We trust you. I hope you can be absolutely loyal.”
Mae stood straight. After all, she’d been a mercenary and fought underground matches. “Don’t worry. During the mission period, my life belongs to my employer.”
She was loyal to her employer and would never betray them.
“Good.” Irene nodded.
She actually quite liked this girl. Even her taste in men matched Irene’s.
“Don’t be so tense. Come on, sit here. You look too much like a bodyguard. People will get suspicious,” Irene said, dropping her earlier seriousness. She smiled and had Mae sit down, then stuffed a pile of snacks into her arms.
A girl this age should be bright and carefree, blooming on a college campus, not like Mae, forged into a cold machine that only knew how to execute orders.
Mae’s experiences were somewhat similar to Adriana’s, except that the outside world was even crueler.
Adriana had mostly endured emotional torment, but Mae had grown up through physical brutality.
A young girl, taken to Southeast Astoria by her foster parents, surviving all these years by fighting underground and working as a mercenary… You can imagine how brutal that life was.
Thinking of Adriana made Irene feel even more sorry for Mae.
“Want some fruit?
“Milk?

“How about some cake?
“Don’t just sit there… Wanna watch a movie?”
Sitting on the couch, Mae felt awkward for the first time.

Before she met Gary, no one had ever been kind to her. But Gary was a man. He’d saved her life, yes, but he wouldn’t be this considerate in small details… Yet Irene, who already knew she had feelings for Gary, was still kind to her. She couldn’t help but wonder if it was an act.
And yet, Mae couldn’t see any pretense in Irene at all.
“Before I came, Mr. Harrison talked to me. He asked me … whether I had inappropriate feelings toward him. I guess you were the one who noticed, right?” Mae decided to be straightforward with Irene.
Irene nodded, not really taking it too seriously. “Yeah. I could tell at a glance. But don’t be nervous. It just means we both have good taste. Just don’t try to steal him from me.”
“He loves you very much. He’d give his life for you. That kind of love isn’t something ordinary people can wedge into. I don’t have that ability,” Mae said calmly, fully aware of herself. “I’ll adjust my mindset as soon as possible. I won’t cause trouble for you or him.”
Irene leaned against the wall, looked at Mae meaningfully, and smiled. “Don’t overthink it.”
In the past, she’d met plenty of women chasing Gary. Most of those rivals were thorny, practically wanting to tear her apart. This Mae was actually interesting.
At Haldoria University.
Adriana and Yolanda finished class and stretched lazily.
“Have you noticed how quiet the classroom is today?” Yolanda gave Adriana a mischievous look. They exchanged glances, and both laughed.
With Nicole gone, the classroom was way too quiet.
Everyone could finally study in peace.
“Adriana, set up a dinner. Denton and I want to have a meal with Curtis. They’re brothers. I think it’s necessary to properly strengthen their relationship.” Savannah walked over, practically issuing orders.

Adriana was stunned. Ever since the fake Nicole was exposed, Savannah had clearly switched tactics and goals, now taking the route of reconciling the two brothers. She had no clue what kind of game she was playing.
But Adriana was very sure Savannah had someone backing her. And that person was very likely the one Curtis had been looking for.
“Are you out of your mind? I take back what I just said…” Yolanda rolled her eyes. She took back her comment about the classroom being quiet.
There were still plenty of annoying flies.
“Sure.” Adriana smiled. “But my husband’s pretty busy. I’ll go back and talk to him first. How about we pick a time then?”
Yolanda stared at Adriana in shock. Did she take the wrong medicine? Why is she even entertaining Savannah?
Savannah nodded, as if she was saying, At least you know your place. “Alright. We’ll wait for your message.”
She left with Denton, who looked helpless and snuck a glance at Adriana, not understanding why she had agreed so easily.
“Do you have a fever?” After Savannah and Denton left, Yolanda reached out and touched Adriana’s forehead.
“Savannah is up to something. She’s changed her goal. Let’s see what she’s really trying to do,” Adriana whispered.
