Chapter 289 Down and Out
All she needed to do was believe in Curtis firmly.
“That day, Yolanda analyzed that the people behind everything might be the Gills…”

Adriana didn’t know much about them, but she had heard a thing or two. The Gills had made their fortune through foreign trade. Several major ports in Haldoria and Harborton were assets passed down from their ancestors.
Many privately owned ports, including those overseas, were operated by the Gills and had well–developed shipping routes.
Thanks to that, more than 30 years ago, over half of the country’s overseas trade relied on the Gills‘ ports. They made enormous profits simply by taking commissions.
Later on, Jeremy built the largest port in Harborton’s West Suburb. After Curtis entered the Lincoln Group, he also established multiple trade routes in the East Suburb. That finally broke the Gills‘ monopoly over export trade.
If one traced it back, the Gills did have reason to hold a grudge against the Bartons and the Lincolns.
But over the past few years, the Gills had kept a very low profile and had almost no interaction with either family.
“The situation with the Gills is pretty complicated. It won’t be easy to investigate them,” Curtis. said as he held Adriana and gently comforted her. “Don’t worry. I’ll figure it out as soon as possible.”
“Savannah must know who’s really behind it,” Adriana said softly.
The reason she had tolerated Savannah and hadn’t kicked her out was that she wanted to see the true plan and motive of the person behind her.
“Savannah is just a small pawn. She’s not qualified to come into contact with the mastermind,” Curtis said, caressing Adriana’s hair. “The person she’s closest to is Danielle. There’s not much value in watching her, but we still need to be careful.”
Adriana froze for a moment. Savannah is just a small pawn. So it seemed that the biggest mastermind behind Savannah was Chandler.
Frowning slightly, Adriana realized she didn’t need to entertain Savannah since she wasn’t very useful.

Chapter 289 Down and Out
She just needed to find a way to deal with her.
Adriana snorted and leaned into Curtis’s embrace. “There’s something seriously wrong with Savannah. She’s acting like she owns this place, and she even wants to scheme for your inheritance… I feel like strangling her.”
Curtis laughed. “Since when did you get so rough?”
Adriana was angry and didn’t respond. She curled up in his arms, feeling a little wronged. “Don’t let anything happen to you…”
Her voice was muffled, faintly choked with emotion.
She didn’t want anything to happen to Curtis.
“Sure,” Curtis replied softly. His heart ached for her, but there were some things he simply couldn’t give her a clear answer.
That night, Curtis didn’t stay home.
Adriana was alone in bed, struggling to fall asleep.
The baby in her belly was growing. Soon, her bump would start to show, and it wouldn’t be possible to hide her pregnancy much longer. Curtis was speeding things up because he was worried that those people would shift their attention to Adriana once her baby bump showed.
Curtis would rather shoulder all the risks himself than let anything happen to his wife or child.
At Dreamnight Lounge.
Ever since marrying Adriana, Curtis rarely came to places like this for social engagements.
“It’s been a while, Mr. Lincoln. You’ve been through so much, yet you didn’t tell us anything. We could’ve helped you out.” Matthew had organized the gathering this time. Curtis had long since grown accustomed to both genuine and fake people.
He took the initiative to toast everyone, then stepped outside to answer a phone call.
“Can’t you tell? Curtis is really down and out now. Even if he’s holding onto hundreds of billions in inheritance, he’s no longer the high–spirited Lincoln Group CEO he used to be,” someone whispered. “Back then, Curtis wouldn’t have paid us any attention. Forget offering a toast–he probably wouldn’t even spare us a glance.”

“Well, Harold gave all the shares to Denton. Of course, he’s miserable. Besides, almost the entire business circle is blacklisting him now. Anyone who gets close to him is asking for trouble.”
As soon as those words were spoken, everyone fell silent. No one wanted to invite unnecessary trouble.
“If anyone doesn’t want to stay, you can leave now. No hard feelings,” Matthew said in a low voice.
He had organized the gathering mainly to show Raymond that his relationship with Curtis was unchanged. That way, Curtis would surely invest, and Raymond would obediently hand over the shares and management rights.
Since these people were afraid, there was no point forcing it.
“Well, Mr. Langford, it’s not that we don’t want to show you respect. It’s just that Curtis is right at the center of the storm right now. We don’t dare get involved with him,” someone spoke up. “Coincidentally, I have something going on at home. My wife just had a baby, so I should head
back.”
Once a person took the lead in leaving, the others quickly followed suit. Everyone was afraid of being associated with Curtis.
Back then, these people had been eager to cling to him. Now, each of them was more realistic than the last.
Matthew scoffed. He had seen through it all. This was how the circle works–there was no such thing as genuine feelings, only constant self–interest.
When Curtis returned, he found that only Matthew was left in the private room. He wasn’t surprised at all. In fact, he had expected it.
