“Why are you being so polite to her? She’s just an orphan who sees money as everything. Now she gets to ride on Curtis’s coattails, but your grandfather’s inheritance should’ve included half for you from the start,” Savannah muttered quietly, stirring trouble.
Denton didn’t say a word. He sat properly on the couch.
Savannah kept pushing. “Denton, you can’t keep being this passive. Keep this up, and you’ll crash and burn.”
She sighed and continued. “What you need to do now is stay on good terms with Curtis on the surface. That way, if something happens to him, you’ll have a chance to fight for his inheritance.”
“Why would something happen to Curtis?” Denton frowned at Savannah. He was already holding back, afraid he wouldn’t be able to control himself.
Savannah hesitated, stumbling over her words. “I mean… if, hypothetically… You know, he’s made so many enemies. What if something happens one day?”
Denton’s face darkened. He said nothing.
He wasn’t stupid. He’d already figured it out. If something happened to Curtis, the person pulling the strings would step forward and push him to fight for Curtis’s inheritance.
This was likely just one step in that person’s so–called foolproof plan.
money would go First, they tried to have the Langfords trick Curtis into investing so all his down the drain. If that failed, there was a second plan–get rid of Curtis. Maybe even get rid of Adriana too.
After all, Curtis and Adriana had no children. If both of them were eliminated, the inheritance could only go to Denton.
This plan was eerily similar to what happened back then, when Jeremy’s son and daughter–in- law were both killed in Haldoria. Chandler thought he’d be the final beneficiary, never expecting the real Nicole to still be alive.
So now, the person behind the scenes was trying to reuse the same old playbook.

By the time Curtis got home, the food was almost cold.
He’d been busy all day, putting on a show for Raymond.

Raymond was already wavering. He’d rather hand all the shares over to Matthew than fail the task assigned by whoever was pulling the strings.
That person’s identity was growing more and more clusive, and it made Curtis increasingly
uneasy.
What he worried about wasn’t his own safety. It was Adriana’s.
If the mastermind stayed hidden in the shadows, danger would always be lurking.
“Curtis, dinner’s ready.” Adriana smiled at him, telling him to wash his hands and eat.
Savannah and Denton were already seated. When Curtis returned, Savannah suddenly became quiet. She didn’t say a word and looked gentle and well–behaved.
Adriana rolled her eyes. What a two–faced snake.
“Curtis, it’s been, what, three or four years since we last met?” Savannah took the initiative to speak.
“Yeah.” Curtis nodded, clearly uninterested in chatting with her.
“Do you remember when we were kids? You always said I was cute. Mr. Harold even joked that I should marry you when I grew up,” Savannah said with a smile, clearly provoking Adriana.
“Is that so?” Curtis raised an eyebrow, looking astonished. “Did my grandpa hate much?”
Savannah choked, not quite following. “Huh?”
you that
“I had mental issues as a kid. Anyone who got close to me, I’d want to kill. I killed my mom, and I nearly stabbed my dad to death. Are you sure my grandpa telling you to marry me wasn’t him trying to ruin your life?” Curtis said calmly, half–joking.
Savannah was so startled she almost dropped her utensils. She hurriedly changed the subject. “I was just joking. You and Adriana are a good match…”
Adriana held back her laughter and said nothing.
Denton kept his head down and focused on eating.

It seemed Savannah’s goal of having dinner and creating a show of closeness had been achieved. She quickly made an excuse that she was full and left with Denton.
“There are reporters outside the neighborhood. Tomorrow’s news will probably run stories. about Denton and me being close brothers,” Curtis said in a low voice as he stood by the window, looking outside.
“Their goal might be to keep targeting you. Savannah brought up your inheritance after your death more than once today,” Adriana said nervously, hugging Curtis from behind.
Curtis patted her hand reassuringly. “If something happens to me, the inheritance will be handled properly. It won’t bring trouble to you or the baby.”
Adriana’s eyes reddened. Curtis normally wouldn’t frighten her like this. He must be worried about something happening to himself too.
“Don’t scare me…” Adriana whispered.
“Adriana, whether I’m by your side or not, you have to protect yourself,” Curtis said, his chest aching as well. Some things wouldn’t bring the person behind the scenes out unless he risked his life.
“No matter what happens, you have to trust me. I will never abandon you,” Curtis added.
Adriana quietly held onto Curtis. She had a faint, unsettling premonition in her heart, but since Curtis didn’t say anything, she didn’t ask.
