“You never raised him. You don’t get a penny,” Denton snapped. “And if you keep pushing, don’t expect me to take care of you when you’re old.”

Michael fell quiet. This trip home had shown him just how brutal Denton could be. If Denton said he’d cut him off, he meant it.

Michael couldn’t afford to lose everything.

He had already buried one son. He couldn’t lose another.

“Michael, you need to fight for it. This is your birthright,” the relatives urged, trying to stir him

Adriana looked right at them. “Even if he gets it, none of you will see a dime,” she said, pulling a report from her purse and laid it on the table. “I’m pregnant. Curtis told me the family has a rule. No one gets told before three months. I’m four months along. This is his child. By Lincoln rules, not only can none of you touch the inheritance, but every branch of the family has to chip in to help raise the baby.”

Harold had been generous. He let the side branches live off the Lincoln Group’s success. He gave them support. He built rules to keep the family close. But these people? They took everything and now tore each other apart like scavengers.

The Lincolns stiffened. Not a single one had the guts to speak up again.

They had come here thinking they’d gain something. Now it looked like they’d walk away empty–handed–and maybe even end up losing money.

“If you don’t want to chip in, that’s fine. Reporters are still outside. Let’s make it official and cut ties now,” Adriana said as she stood up. She made sure it wasn’t private. She wanted every single one of them to say it in front of the press and Curtis’s portrait. That they were done with

him.

The color drained from their faces. The man was dead, after all.

But none of them wanted trouble later. So they stood up, said the words, and left without another word.

Michael saw the shift and didn’t stick around. He slunk off fast.

Once the funeral was over, Adriana wiped her face and sat in the living room. She started organizing the things Curtis had left behind.

“Denton, it’s over now. Let’s go. Lily’s waiting for you at home. She doesn’t have a place to stay. You’re all she’s got,” Savannah urged, wasting no time.

The house she bought was fully furnished and move–in ready. She had cameras hidden everywhere. The whole place was a trap.

Now that Curtis was out of the picture, Savannah couldn’t wait to catch Denton slipping so she could tighten her grip on Lincoln Group.

“Denton, your brother’s gone. This house doesn’t have a single man left in it. Those greedy relatives keep showing up, sniffing around for the inheritance. Who knows what they’ll try next? Adriana’s pregnant. She can’t handle everything by herself. You’re the only man left in the family. You need to be here,” Yolanda said, voice low and steady.

Denton nodded right away. Finally, a good excuse to stay. “Ms. Feron, I’m sorry. My brother just passed, and Lincoln Group’s in chaos. I’ve got to be here for my sister–in–law. If I’m not, the execs will use it to stir up drama.”

Savannah’s expression cracked, but she had no comeback. She had been the one who pushed to stay close to Curtis. All so she could get a piece of the pie once he died.

Even if there wasn’t much left, most of the power players still backed Curtis. She couldn’t afford to look bad.

“Fine. Just make time to stop by. Lily’s been in a really bad place lately. She needs you,” Savannah said in a sweet, fake voice. Then she glanced at Yolanda and added, louder this time, “Girls like Lily–calm and obedient–are the ones worth marrying.”

She didn’t bother hiding the dig. She meant girls like Yolanda were the opposite, and she wasn’t a good match for Denton.

Denton stayed silent. He shot Yolanda a quick look. Yolanda nearly snapped. But she swallowed it.

As soon as Savannah left, Yolanda slammed the door hard. The sound echoed like a slap across

the the house. “She’s banned from Adriana’s place. I don’t want her nasty energy stinking up

air.”

Denton bobbed his head fast. “Yeah, totally. I won’t let her in again. Adriana, Yolanda, are you hungry? I’ll whip something up.”

He was trying way too hard to be helpful. He darted into the kitchen like it was a getaway. Yolanda, still annoyed but a little embarrassed, followed him in.

Adriana was still in the study, carefully sorting through Curtis‘ belongings. She picked up a few

important items and walked over to the safe. She meant to lock them away. Then she froze. She didn’t know the code.

She tried the ones Curtis always used on his phone and apps. Wrong. She tried again. Wrong again. One more try. Still wrong. The screen blinked red. Three failed attempts. The safe would lock itself down.

Adriana paused. Her chest rose as she inhaled. She typed in her birthday.

The lock clicked open with a soft, mechanical sound.

She just stood there, stunned. Her hands stayed frozen above the keypad. It took her a long time to snap out of it.

Curtis had used her birthday as the code.

She opened it slowly. Inside were several folders full of work documents. She didn’t touch them. She wasn’t ready to dig through his business files. She just wanted to place her things inside and close it. But as she leaned down, something at the bottom caught her eye. A photo.

It had been taken at the old Lincoln estate in Govendale. Curtis was just a teenager in the picture, sitting next to a big golden retriever. And right next to him … was a girl with bandages wrapped over her eyes.
