Her heel brushed the floor as her balance shifted. “When Matthew and I broke up, I was in the hospital. Someone walked into my room out of nowhere and tried to kill me.” She swallowed and steadied her voice. “I never crossed anyone. Even if Natasha hated me, she would not hire a hitman like that. I still don’t know who wanted me dead.” The skin on Adriana’s arms tightened as fear crawled over her.
A heavy sense of dread pressed down on her chest.
Maybe she was not imagining things.
Jeremy’s strange attitude toward her stays in her mind. Jeremy exposing the fake Nicole and Danielle at the Bartons‘ reunion stays in her mind too. Everything felt planned. Someone is being cleared a path.
The truth felt obvious. Jeremy had already found his real granddaughter.
Adriana’s fingers went numb. She was about to speak when Irene walked in.
Lately, Irene always wore loose trench coats. Her frame was slim, so the pregnancy barely showed, but the signs were there if you looked closely.
“Adriana, are you packed yet? We’re leaving the afternoon after tomorrow.” Irene studied her face and frowned at how pale she looked. “Don’t be sad. You’ll get through this.”
Adriana nodded and hugged her while tears fell. Her shoulders shook as emotion poured out. When Irene was not paying attention, Adriana pulled a few strands of her hair free. Her fingers moved fast and carefully.
Irene did not notice and assumed Adriana was overwhelmed. She stayed gentle and calm. Yolanda saw everything from the side. Her breath caught, and fear settled deep in her stomach.
She was not stupid. She knew what Adriana was starting to suspect.
Irene stayed at Adriana’s place for a long time before she finally left.
The door closed behind her with a soft sound. The moment Irene was gone, Adriana handed the hair to Yolanda with shaking hands.

Her eyes stayed locked on Yolanda’s face. Yolanda held Adriana’s hand and nodded. She did not need words to understand it was for a DNA test.
If Adriana’s suspicion was right, the danger was beyond measure. This could ruin her life completely.
Yolanda understood the stakes. She knew no one could find out about this test.
“Leave it with me,” Yolanda said in a steady voice.
Adriana nodded and clenched her hands tight. Her nails dug into her palms.
She hoped she was mistaken.
She was not afraid. She just did not want to be dragged into the Bartons‘ schemes.
But if she really was Nicole, then this was her fate. There was no escape from it.
The Langfords‘ place.
The second Matthew stepped through the door, a glass came flying at him. It hit him right in the forehead and soaked his face and shirt with cold water.
Elise stood across the room, her eyes blazing. “Your sister just got out of prison, and you didn’t even bother to pick her up. Where the hell were you? You think you’re too important to listen to your father now? What are you doing clinging to those shares? Hand them over. Now, And that money your father mentioned? Send it to the offshore account immediately. Do you have a death wish for this family?”
Matthew stared at her without saying a word.
He used to wonder how a mother could fail to love her own son.
Now he understood.
She didn’t love him. She only loved herself.
“Matthew! Are you listening to me?” Elise’s voice cracked with anger.
He still didn’t answer.
Raymond walked in, holding up Mia, who was still sobbing. “I heard you’re shifting focus lately. Planning to relocate to Pastalia in the fall?”

Mia wiped at her wet cheeks and glared at her brother. “You almost let me die in there. I swear I won’t let Adriana get away with it.”
Matthew looked at her without a trace of warmth. “The only reason you’re out is that you were diagnosed with a mental disorder. If you ever touch Adriana again, I’ll make sure you rot in a mental hospital for the rest of your life.”
Mia flinched. Her eyes widened as her breath caught in her throat.
She stepped closer and tried to plead. “I’m your real sister. Are you seriously throwing me away for that bitch?”
Matthew’s face stayed cold. “Mia, clearly prison didn’t teach you a damn thing.” He turned to the nanny. “Take her upstairs. She’s unstable. Unless I say otherwise, no one lets her leave this house. If she causes any trouble, it’s on you.”
The nanny and the butler lowered their heads without a word.
Mia’s lips trembled as she turned to Elise. “Mom, he’s lost it. He’s still hooking up with that whore Adriana. He doesn’t even care about me anymore.”
Elise pointed at Matthew, shaking with fury. “What is wrong with you?”
Matthew looked at her without blinking. “The company’s shifting overseas. I’ll be gone for a while. While I’m away, you’d better take care of yourself and keep Mia under control. If she screws up again, I’m not cleaning it up.” Then he turned to Raymond. “You gave me those shares. That means they’re mine. And now you want them back?”
His smile was faint but sharp. “Not a chance.”
Raymond swayed. He looked like he might collapse. “Matthew! You do know I can take it out on your mother? Divorce her?”
