Adriana tightened her grip on his hand, heart aching.

She suddenly felt deeply grateful to Harold. Back then, he’d gone against the entire world to shut down th ‘crazy heir‘ narrative, sealed all rumors about Curtis’s “mental illness,” and devoted himself to grooming his grandson as successor–pushing him into Lincoln Group and helping him climb to the top.

Curtis stared at her, stunned, before finally giving a small nod.

He’d never really questioned whether his own loss of control was orchestrated. But he had dug into his mother’s breakdown–and there were a lot of signs that pointed to foul play, to someone slowly poisoning her mind over time.

“Curtis, whether it’s the Bartons or the Lincolns, your families have been under somebody’s crosshairs for a long time. Someone has been playing you all like chess pieces, carefully, patiently. Their goal is simple: destroy the Bartons and the Lincolns. Wipe you out.” Adriana’s voice shook.

At the Bartons, Jeremy’s only legitimate son and daughter–in–law both died under suspicious circumstances. His only grandchild vanished, lost somewhere in the world, her life or death unknown. Jeremy himself was nearly killed by his illegitimate son, and the family fortune was almost stolen by that son and a fake “granddaughter” working together.

As for the Lincolns, Michael had been useless and easily manipulated–dragged into gambling and high- risk deals, pushed into losing nearly everything, and taking Lincoln Group right to the edge of collapse. Then, he drove his wife insane, and after she died, terrified that the Lincolns‘ downfall would drag him down with them, he signed away all rights to the family’s assets and disappeared, playing dead.

If Harold hadn’t been as decisive and ruthless as he was in his youth–and if Curtis hadn’t been strong enough and smart enough later on–the Lincolns would probably have vanished from Harborton’s elite circle years ago.

Whoever was behind all this knew both families inside and out. They knew every weakness, every habit, every movement.

They knew the Bartons and the Lincolns the way only an insider could.

Which meant this person wasn’t some faceless stranger. They had to be someone familiar–someone close.

But who?

“The truth will come out one day,” Adriana said, fingers lacing through his, her grip firm and warm. “Wher it does, you’re not going to carry this blame anymore. Anything you did while you were being pushed or drugged or manipulated—that’s not on you.”

She knew the real knot in his chest wasn’t Gary or even his mother. It was himself. Curtis couldn’t forgive himself.

That night, for the first time in a long time, Curtis actually slept well.

With Adriana tucked in his arms, his whole body finally relaxed.

The steel–tight wire that had been wrapped around his nerves for years loosened at last.

He’d always been torn. He loved Adriana so much he wanted to chain her to his side, but at the same time, he was terrified she’d get hurt because of him–because of the people hiding in the dark who wanted him destroyed.

Luckily, she’d proven, over and over, that she was never some delicate little rabbit waiting to be slaughtered.

She was his comrade–in–arms–his shield and his salve.

The next morning, when Gary pulled up to take Adriana to the hospital, Curtis walked her out himself.

He still didn’t say a word to Gary–but hey, it was progress.

“Gary, are you still mad at Curtis for stabbing you when he lost control as a kid? I’m really sorry. I know that probably forced you to give up the dream you wanted most…” On the way to Haldoria Hospital, Adriana wanted to apologize to Gary for Curtis.

But the more she thought about it, the more she realized how deep and tangled that rift between them really was.

Neither of them seemed willing to take the first step back.

“I’ve never blamed him,” Gary said at last, after a long silence.

Adriana sat there in stunned silence for a long time, unable to say a word.
