And yet, after all these years, Gary had never once told Curtis why he’d tried to have him committed.
He’d never… explained anything at all.
“Why not … just explain it to him?” Adriana asked quietly.
If they’d just talked, things between them might not have sunk to this point–frozen over, not outright enemies, but treating each other like strangers.
“Because this is the best arrangement we’re going to get,” Gary said. He figured Adriana was sharp enough to understand.
The person in the shadows wasn’t just targeting the Lincolns and the Bartons. They were after the Harrisons, too.
Driving a wedge between the Harrisons and the Lincolns was part of the plan.
An uncle and nephew cutting ties, a “cold” Harrison family turning its back while Curtis was at his lowest- this was exactly the ending the enemy wanted.
Adriana drew in a long breath and turned to look out the window.
What kind of person could lurk in the dark for so many years, calmly moving pieces around, one family at a time?
Someone who’d nearly managed to drag four major families down with them.
“Right now, the only one of the four families that hasn’t taken a direct hit is the Gills…” Adriana murmured. She couldn’t help suspecting them.
“I’ve had people watching the Gills for over 20 years. Back then, the Gill patriarch was an old fox. Aside from swooping in to snatch a few big projects whenever the Lincolns, Bartons, or Harrisons were in trouble, he kept himself clean. No obvious leverage. Nothing easy to grab onto.”
He paused, then went on. “Later, he ‘retired‘ early. Handed control of the Gills and Gill Group over to his son, Marcus, and slipped to the countryside to ‘enjoy life‘ with a mistress–at least, that’s the story he sold to the world.”
Adriana frowned. “The bigger a man’s ambition, the more he acts like he doesn’t care about anything. Retiring early? That sounds like smoke and mirrors to me.”
The Gills definitely didn’t smell right.
“I feel the same. So, I’ve kept people on Marcus and on the old man. So far, though, neither of them has slipped,” Gary said, glancing at her.
If it were that easy to catch them, they wouldn’t be the masterminds able to toy with the Bartons, Lincolns,
and Harrisons for decades.

Back from the hospital, Adriana was distracted the entire ride.
The Gills. Marcus Gill.

She’d heard that Marcus’s little sister, Maya, was also studying in Pastalia and would be in the same program as Denton. Maybe… that was the perfect opening to get closer to the Gills.
“Babe, what did the doctor say?” Curtis came out of the bedroom and froze when he saw Adriana sitting on the couch, spaced out. He immediately crouched down in front of her, panic in his eyes. “Is it you? Or the babies?”
“The doctor said…” Adriana blinked, snapping back to the moment and looking at him. She’d just opened her mouth-
“We save you first.” Curtis gripped her hand tightly. “No matter what the doctor says, we save the mother. Always.”
Adriana stared at him, then couldn’t help laughing. “What are you even thinking? The babies are fine. Everything’s green across the board. When we hit the due date, I just schedule the C–section and pop them
out.”
Curtis finally exhaled. “Then why the long face? I thought—‘
་་
“I invited Gary over for dinner tonight. Irene’s coming too–she’ll be staying here for her delivery as well,” Adriana said, rubbing Curtis’s cheek. “So … Mr. Lincoln, do you feel like honoring us with your presence?”
Curtis narrowed his eyes. “So, now you just make decisions first and inform me after? I swear I have zero authority in this house.”
Adriana quickly threw her arms around his neck, practically climbing onto him. “Honey … just say yes and eat with us, okay?”
Curtis grunted, but he didn’t turn her down.
He just didn’t want to crush her good mood.
“You’re the best,” Adriana said, giggling as she snuggled in closer.
Curtis snorted again, all pride and fake annoyance, then simply scooped her up and headed for the bedroom.
“Tomorrow, skip class. Just stay home and focus on the babies.” He didn’t want her heading to campus now. “No way. My professors and classmates already bend over backward to help me. I can’t start skipping just because I’m a little heavy in the middle.” Adriana looped her arms around his neck and wheedled.
In the end, Curtis could only agree,
That was how he was–possessive, ruthless, and decisive with everyone else, but completely helpless when it came to her.

That evening, Irene swept in like a storm.
Finding Curtis alive didn’t shock her. Honestly, she’d seen it coming.
She and Gary had both lived long enough not to react like hot–blooded kids.

“So, you played dead just to sneak off and babysit your wife, huh? Not bad. For once, you’re acting like a real man.” Irene laughed, eyeing Curtis up and down.
Off to the side, Gary’s face was a whole weather system–dark clouds, low pressure, and thunder rumbling. He snorted.
Curtis ignored him completely. The two of them still managed to be more distant than strangers.
Denton, on the other hand, was young enough not to catch the vibe at all. Cheeks stuffed with one of Yolanda’s cherry tarts, he stared between Curtis and Gary, eyes sparkling. “Curtis, you and Gary look exactly alike!”
People always said nephews took after their uncles. The two of them, both stone–faced and both silently annoyed by each other, sitting at the same table–it only made the resemblance more obvious.
