Ronan didn’t dare challenge Curtis’s judgment, but he remained deeply sceptical of Justin’s motives.
A man who had navigated the inner circle of the Bartons for years without any desire for a stake in the business? Ronan wasn’t buying it.
And Jeremy had certainly played his part in raising Justin all those years, onl everything to Adriana and leave Justin with nothing.
By any normal measure, Justin would rebel.
Even the senior executives at Barton Group shared that fear, which was why they were pushing so hard for Adriana and Justin to formalize their alliance through marriage.
“Ms. Xander, Mr. Fowler is still in a meeting… And you don’t have an appointment, so…”
Outside the door, an assistant’s frantic voice cut through the tension. Ronan’s heart jumped. Was Adriana here?
They knew she was in Haldoria, but showing up unannounced like this? Something wasn’t right.
Ronan shot Curtis a nervous look. “Curtis, did you and Adriana have a fight?”
Curtis looked just as confused. They hadn’t fought…
The conference room door swung open violently with a loud bang.
Seeing the fury in Adriana’s eyes, Ronan forced an awkward smile. “Hey, Adriana … you should’ve called ahead. I’ve, uh, got another meeting. I’ll just … step out.”
Ronan had excellent survival instincts. Adriana was clearly in a state, and he had no intention of becoming part of whatever drama was about to unfold between the couple.
He bolted, leaving a bewildered and slightly panicked Curtis alone.
Curtis stood quickly, hurrying to Adriana’s side, completely clueless about his transgression but ready to apologize anyway, because the look on her face suggested she was seconds from breaking down. “I’m sorry, Adriana… What’s wrong? What happened?”
A good man’s first rule: apologize first, figure out the crime later.
Adriana narrowed her eyes, her tone icy. “You don’t even know what you did, and you’re already apologizing?”

Curtis faltered. He genuinely had no idea. “I didn’t text you back fast enough?”
Silence.
“I haven’t wrapped up this mess yet, haven’t uncovered the mastermind, I’m still undercover… I can’t be with you and the kids?”
He probed carefully.
Adriana wasn’t rushing to explain, so it probably wasn’t catastrophic.

“I met with Savannah tonight. She used Mister’s identity and the evide bargaining chips,” Adriana said, sinking into a sofa and looking straight at

Curtis immediately fetched her a glass of water and sat beside her. “Did she upset you?”
Adriana shook her head.
Savannah was too slippery. She wouldn’t reveal Mister’s identity outright. She only wanted to negotiate terms.
“What condition did she set that got you this worked up?” Curtis asked lightly, trying to keep things calm.
“For me to seduce Silas Harrison!” Adriana spat out, gripping Curtis’s arm angrily. How could anyone be so vile?
She’d never even met Silas!
“She’s using the information on Mister as leverage and threatening Denton’s situation. That witch! Thank God Denton and I saw through her scheme from the start. What if he had actually fallen for it? Would we be at her mercy now?” Adriana was growing more incensed by the second. Not even Natasha and Mia had made her this furious.
Savannah was on another level of malice.
“Don’t let it get to you. We have enough on her to put her away for good right now,” Curtis soothed, ready to make the call just to calm his wife.

“Not yet.” Adriana pressed her hand over his. “The evidence she’s holding… It’s too tempting to ignore.”
Curtis drew a sharp breath. “Babe… Tell me you didn’t storm in here just to tell me you’re actually considering going after Silas.”
Now he was on the verge of exploding.
